Corner Brook is a port city located in northeastern Canada, on Newfoundland Island's west coast. The city is Atlantic Canada's most northern one and has a population of around 20,000.
Corner Brook Port (locode CACBK) started its cruise tourism business in 1976. Cruise itineraries that commonly visit the Port of Corner Brook include Canada and New England voyages (departures from East Coast USA ports), Transatlantic crossings (between Europe and Canada/USA) and North Atlantic/Arctic routes.
Situated at the mouth of the Humber River, in the Bay of Islands, Corner Brook is the second-largest city in Canada's Newfoundland and Labrador province (following St Johns) and functions as a service center for both northern and western Newfoundland. Corner Brook is home to multiple post-secondary institutions, entertainment venues, provincial and federal government offices, and Western Memorial Regional Hospital.
The city is on the same latitude as Gaspe (Quebec), which has a similar landscape and size but is located on the other side of Saint Lawrence Gulf.
In 2017, the cruise port handled 15 ship calls and a total of 13,186 passengers plus 6,896 crew. Maiden port calls made the RSSC-Regent ships Seven Seas Mariner and Seven Seas Navigator, also Vision of the Seas (RCI-Royal Caribbean) and Artania (Phoenix Reisen).
In 2018, the Port received 15 ship calls and handled 17,305 passengers plus 8,584 crew. Maiden calls made the vessels AIDAvita (AIDA), Arcadia (P&O UK) and Crystal Symphony (Crystal OCEAN). In the pre-COVID 2019 were received 18 ship calls, 25,130 passengers and 11,552 crew, and 3 first-time ships - Zuiderdam (HAL-Holland America), Mein Schiff 1 (TUI), and MSC Meraviglia (MSC).
Following the Coronavirus crisis, in 2022 the Port handled 23 ship calls, 25,951 passengers and 14,928 crew. Inaugural visits made vessels of the companies HAL (Nieuw Statendam), Fred Olsen (Borealis), Hurtigruten (Amundsen, Fram), Ambassador UK (Ambience), Princess (Sky Princess), and NCL (Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Pearl).
2023 was the Corner Brook Port's record-breaking year for cruise tourism, with handled 28 ship calls, 40,948 passengers and 20,246 crew. The Port also surpassed 300,000 passengers since the introduction of the cruise shipping in the region (1976). In 2023 were also received 6 new vessels - Zaandam (HAL), Coral Princess (Princess), Carnival Legend (CCL), Ambience (Ambassador UK), Jewel of the Seas (RCI), Crystal Serenity (Crystal A&K).
Starting in 1767 and through the 1870s, the lands of Eastern Canada were surveyed by Captain James Cook (British explorer and navigator/1728-79), who thoroughly mapped the coastal landscape. James Cook Historic Site (atop Crow Hill) overlooks the city and provides spectacular views of the Blomidon Mountains and Bay of Islands.
Corner Brook's climate is classified as humid continental (Dfb). The average temperature throughout the standard cruise season is 18°C/8°C in June, 22°/13° in July and August, 17°C/9°C in September and 11°C/4°C in October. Precipitation levels are highest in late summer/early fall, and it is strongly suggested to check the forecast before arrival to be prepared.
When visiting Corner Brook for the first time, cruisers will be pleasantly surprised by the adventure readily available on their doorstep. Zipline across a colossal gorge and appreciate the breathtaking views of the Humber Valley in Steady Brook, bike to Bartlett’s Point Park (along the waterfront), stroll the Corner Brook Steam Trail, or experience the great outdoors via ATV on backcountry terrain.
The city is also one of the gateways to the Gros Morne National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site/1973-established as a Reserve, 2005-established as a National Park) where tourists can walk across the Earth’s mantle.
Corner Brook NL cruise terminal
Cruise ships to Corner Brook NF dock near downtown. The walking distance from the cruise port is about 10 minutes. Shuttle buses arrive at the cruise port 1/2 hour after the ship's arrival and 1 hour prior to its departure. The shuttle service is provided by the Corner Brook Port authority and is free of charge.
For passenger transportation between the port's docking pier and the town are often used school buses (serving as complimentary shuttles). The buses' drop-off point is right in downtown, from where passengers can visit the town's most popular tourist attractions - City Hall, City Library, CBMA (Corner Brook Museum and Archives), CDLI (Corner Brook War Memorial), the Rotary Arts Centre. Within a short walk are also shops, restaurants, cafes, churches.
In 2018 was inaugurated a new permanent dockside facility. The new building (not a cruise terminal) houses a small market area and a tourist center (for passenger welcome activities).
In early 2022, the Port initiated a cruise enhancement project to elevate its overall guest experience. Adjacent to the dock and tender facilities is a bustling vendor market, information kiosk, Wi-Fi room, and comfortable seating to listen to live entertainment. Guests can avail of the Corner Brook Port Corporation’s complimentary shuttle bus service or walk 5-10 minutes to reach downtown. The shuttle service operates half an hour after the ship’s arrival and ends one hour before its departure.
Within the Civic Square, cruisers are invited to visit City Hall (and its rooftop garden) Corner Brook Museum and Achieves, and the Rotary Arts Centre.
The Mill Whistler Road Train tours through the city’s core passing by unique buildings and venues (shops, restaurants, cafes, churches).
