07 July 2021Ship GroundingOn July 7, 2021, the cruise ship ran aground on Cumberland River (near mile marker 62, Canton KY/Kentucky USA). The accident occurred as the boat strayed from the shipping channel and grounded on the sandbar. The ship was in Lake Barkley (damned reservoir on the river) that crosses the Kentucky-Tennessee border. No injuries, damages or pollution were reported. To the scene, the USCG Station Paducah dispatched a 29-ft SPC-SW boat (Special Purpose Craft-Shallow Water) with a CG Paducah marine investigator. The passengers' debarkation was conducted via tenders and pontoon boats, with the assistance of rescue boats. A 3 NM (nautical miles) safety zone on the river was established (between markers 61 and 64). Two tug boats were also dispatched for assistance. American Jazz was operating a 7-night “Music Cities Cruise” (Memphis to Nashville) and carrying a total of 164 people (120 passengers plus 54 crew). On July 9, ACL-American Cruise Lines commented that the effort to refloat the vessel took longer than expected. Via tenders passengers were transported to Nashville for the scheduled shore excursions. |
