13 August 2024Fire AccidentOn August 13, 2024, around an hour after the ship arrived and docked at Port Jeju (South Korea), an engine room fire resulted in three injured crew and interior damages. The automatic fire-fighting system was activated, and the fire was quickly extinguished. Two of the crew were treated for minor smoke inhalation, one was hospitalized. As a precaution, all passengers were evacuated, and the ship was boarded by local firefighters and Coast Guard teams. The accident happened during the roundtrip voyage from Tianjin visiting Jeju Island (unscheduled overnight stay Aug 13th/arrival 22:22 UTC, to Aug 15/departure 12:17 UTC) and Fukuoka. |
10 April 2020Other Incidents(crew repatriation) On April 10, 2020, Costa Cruises announced a plan to use Costa Mediterranea to repatriate some of the fleet's Filipino and Indonesian crew. The 30-day voyage (La Spezia Itlay to Shanghai China) included debarkation in La Spezia of the Mediterranea's European crew and embarkation of all Indonesian-Filipino crew from the fleetmate Costa Pacifica. In Brindisi Italy (April 16-18), to Mediterranea were tendered Filipino-Indonesian crew from Costa Fortuna. None of these Costa ships had Coronavirus- (COVID-19)-positive cases - neither among their former passengers or among the staff-crew. All the Mediterranea's non-Filipino-Indonesian crew (221) via tender boats were transferred to Pacifica, then flown via charter flights to their home countries. On the same day (April 12) Pacifica's Filipino-Indonesian crew (408) were tendered to Mediterranea. On April 13, Mediterranea departed La Spezia en-route to Brindisi (arrived on April 16) to pick up Fortuna's Filipino-Indonesian crew. Mediterranea's arrival in Manila (Philippines) and Jakarta (Java Indonesia) was initially planned for mid-May. However, after changing the ship's Master (Captain), the Asian crew repatriation plan was postponed by 14 days - needed for the mandatory self-isolation of the new Captain. The ship departed for Asia on May 15 (out of Brindisi). The voyage (through Suez Canal) had planned arrivals in Muscat (Oman) on May 27 (technical stop for bunkering), in Jakarta on June 15-16 (overnight) and in Manila on June 22 (debarkation process lasted through July 2). After completing the crew debarkation, on July 3 the liner (carrying only 120 skeleton crew) left Manila to Singapore. |
01 June 2019Structural and Technical IssuesOn June 1, 2019, while berthed in call port Stavanger Norway, the liner reported a technical issue during the planned lifeboat exercise. The vessel was unable to hoist back 2 of its lifeboats back to their davits. The port authority deployed a floating crane to put back and secure the boats. Ship's departure (scheduled for 7 pm) was delayed until late evening. No injuries or damages were reported. The incident occurred at the end of 9-day Northern Europe / Norwegian Fjords cruise (itinerary May 26 - June 4) roundtrip from homeport Amsterdam Holland to Norway (Haugesund, Geiranger, Hellesylt, Andalsnes, Flam, Stavanger) and Germany (Bremerhaven). |
24 August 2015Structural and Technical IssuesOn August 24, 2015, the vessel was anchored in call port Kotor Montenegro and began offloading passengers via tender boats when it experienced a technical issue with one of the boats. Upon lowering, one of the tenders (on Teseo Deck 4 portside) broke its stern cable. The tender remained hanging on its fore wire rope. Fortunately, the boat was empty and no injuries were reported. |
08 March 2008Crew / Passenger Deaths(overboard) On March 8, 2008, a 39-year-old female passenger jumped overboard after a quarrel with her boyfriend. The incident occurred at around midnight when the ship was approx 20 ml / 30 km southeast of Key Largo (Florida Keys archipelago). The ship turned around and conducted a search and rescue operation, later joined by USCG vessels. The woman's body was never found. The ship was on a 7-day Western Caribbean cruise from homeport Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale) Florida, Due to the incident, the itinerary’s first call port Key West FL was dropped. |
07 April 2006Boat RescueOn April 7, 2006, in call port George Town (Grand Cayman), the cruise ship rescued a total of 54 passengers and 3 crew from the tourist boat Sun Runner. The boat first capsized on a sandbar, then began taking water and tilted starboard. When all passengers on board moved to the opposite side, the boat fell portside, plunging all of them into the water. No injuries were reported. |
