08 May 2024Coast Guard Medevacs

On May 8, 2024, a mother and her son were medevaced by a US Air Force helicopter.

For the medical evacuation, the 920th Rescue Wing (from the US Air Force's Air Reserve Component) deployed four aircraft - two helicopters (Sikorsky HH-60 Pave Hawk) and two planes (HC-130J Combat King II). The aircraft carried teams of rescue officers and pararescue specialists from Brevard County's Patrick Space Force Base.

During the medevac, Carnival Venezia was approx 350 NM (~400 mi/~650 km) off the USA's eastern coast. The 8-hour operation (1200+ mi/1930+ km flown) required three air-to-air refuelings to reach the cruise ship's location.

The woman and her kid were hoisted from the helideck and flown to a land hospital. All of the aircraft then returned to Patrick SFB.

The incident occurred in the beginning of the 11-day "Eastern Caribbean Cruise" (itinerary May 6-17, roundtrip from NYC) visiting St Thomas Island USVI (Charlotte Amalie/May 10th), Puerto Rico (San Juan/May 11th), Dominicana (Amber Cove/May 12th), Grand Turk Island (Cockburn Town/May 13th), and The Bahamas (Half Moon Cay/May 14th).

I’ve been watching for an incident with deaths on the cruise I was on and have heard nothing. I know firsthand 2 people died on the ship but heard it was 4 from a person traveling with that group. It was drug-related. They overdosed.

It was Carnival Venezia April 15-26, 2024.

The incident reportedly occurred during the 11-day "Eastern Caribbean Cruise" (itinerary April 15-26, roundtrip from NYC, New York USA) visiting destinations in the US Virgin Islands (Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas Island/Apr 19), Puerto Rico (San Juan/Apr 20), Dominicana (Amber Cove/Apr 21), Grand Turk Island (Cockburn Town/Apr 22) and The Bahamas (Half Moon Cay/Apr 23).
