08 March 2018Boat RescueOn March 8 and 9, 2018, the icebreaker Nordica assisted the Rajavartiolaitos (Finnish Border Guard) in a rescue operation in the Gulf of Finland, approx 35 km / 22 mi south of Kotka Finland. On March 8, the ship was in icebreaking duty. At 0:45 pm, Rajavartiolaitos required assistance for a cargo vessel in distress. The freighter was in international waters, located to the west of Gogland island (Russia) and en-route to St Petersburg (Russia). The cargo ship suffered leak and severe engine room flooding (5 m / 16 ft deep). MSV Nordica was the first on-site vessel and, as instructed by Rajavartiolaitos, took the maritime rescue mission control. The leak was managed during the evening. On March 9, at 7:30 pm, the Finnish patrol vessel Tursas arrived and at 11:25 am released Nordica from mission control. |
