22 August 2024Ship Collision / Allision

In the early morning of August 22, 2024, while maneuvering for docking at Heysham Port (Lancashire, England), the ship collided with the dock and sustained hull damages.

No injuries among passengers or crew were reported.

Passengers scheduled for the Manxman’s 2:15 AM BST return service (to Liverpool) were transferred to the backup vessel Ben-My-Chree (IMO 9170705, 1998-built), which departed shortly after 5 AM. The delay caused significant disruption to the scheduled 8:45 AM BST Heysham-bound crossing.

Increasing gales in the Irish Sea further complicated the situation, resulting in the cancellation of all afternoon sailings to and from Liverpool, and also the remaining services between Douglas and Heysham. The Steam Packet Company cited the adverse weather and berth slot restrictions at Port Heysham as reasons for the cancellations, emphasizing that passenger and crew safety were paramount.

Earlier, the company confirmed that Manxman's scheduled crossing to Liverpool was canceled due to strong winds that led to wave heights exceeding safe operational limits for the Manannan. Additionally, the August 20th evening’s 19:45 BST departure of Manxman from Douglas to Lancashire was delayed by 45 minutes because of unsettled conditions in the Irish Sea.

A spokesman for the company stated that the damaged Manxman would remain at Heysham Port while repairs are undertaken. Contingency plans were implemented to minimize disruption, including using Ben-My-Chree for passenger services and the Arrow (IMO 9119414, 1998-built) for freight transfers.

The relevant authorities, including the UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch, were duly notified of the accident.

The Ben-My-Chree, which was in Heysham on a cargo run, returned to Douglas Harbour at 9 AM (Aug 22nd) and its subsequent crossing back to Lancashire was delayed until 11:30 AM.

Note: Actually, this type of marine accident is called “allision” (striking a fixed object) as opposed to “collision” (striking another vessel).
