2019 - delayed delivery due to shipyard's financial problems

On June 18, 2020, the shipbuilding company Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) announced that Brittany Ferries terminated its contract for the construction of the cruiseferry Honfleur (FSG yard hull number 774).

FSG's general representative (Stefan Denkhaus) commented “We cannot understand the customer’s decision, and the termination came as a surprise". According to the shipbuilder, the ship's completion will take 11-12 months (June-July 2021).

FSG (shipowner during the vessel's construction) said it is in talks with several companies to arrange further financing for this shipbuilding project - which can be completed only at the Flensburg Yard.

Note: In February 2020, FSG announced the cancellation of two newbuild projects by the ferry company TT-Line (Tasmania). In March-April, the FSG Shipyard was temporarily closed / suspended operations due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

07 May 2019Structural and Technical Issues

On May 7, 2019, Brittany Ferries issued a brief update on the Honfleur website, announcing that vessel's delivery will be delayed due to shipyard's financial issues. In January 2019, the ferry company announced that the German shipbuilder FSG (Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft) stopped works which could delay vessel’s construction and delivery. In February 2019, the Lars Windhorst-owned Sapinda Group purchased with 76% of FSG and saved the shipyard from possible bankruptcy.

Cruise ship's launch was scheduled for June 2019, with planned inauguration in December 2019.

Note: On October 31, 2014, the Norwegian company Siem Industries Inc (1980-founded, with subsidiaries specializing in renewable energy, oil and gas services) acquired FSG with ~750 employees. Founded in 1872, FSG has prodiced over 700 ships of different types, including cargo steamers, sail ships, cargo barges, floating drydocks, oil tankers, fishing vessels, naval and passenger ships (RoRo freight and passenger ferries), submarines. Among the ferry companies with FSG-built units are BC Ferries, DFDS, Seatruck Ferries, Brittany Ferries, Irish Ferries, CalMac.
