- propulsion/power loss - 2024 (during a Transatlantic crossing)
27 November 2024Propulsion / Power LossDuring the Transatlantic crossing from Africa to South America (Cape Town South Africa to Ushuaia Argentina) the ship suffered an engine malfunction (involving one of the Azipods/electric motors) resulting in reduced service speed (from 16 kn down to 8 kn/30 to 15 kmh/18 to 9 mph). The issue led to major itinerary changes - the cancellation of all planned Antarctic landings - Elephant Island, Paulet Island, Brown Bluff, and Deception Island, scheduled for visiting over 4 days. These calls were canceled and SH Diana proceeded directly to homeport Ushuaia where a team of engineers undertook the necessary repairs. The ship left Cape Town on November 14th, arrived in Ushuaia on November 30th, and the next voyage was scheduled to depart from Ushuaia on December 3rd. From the original itinerary remained only one port - Grytviken on South Georgia Island (the UK's South Sandwich Islands), visited on November 24th. As compensation, Swan Hellenic offered a 50% refund or a 65% FCC/future cruise credit, valid for two years. Additionally, the company arranged complimentary excursions in Ushuaia during the extended stay until the December 3rd departure. |
