16 January 2022Other IncidentsOn January 16, 2022, the ship assisted the evacuation of the "Antarctic Quest 21 Expedition" team (led by Paul Hart) which spent 5 weeks on the Antarctic Peninsula. The expedition members boarded SH Minerva at Portal Point (Reclus Peninsula's northeast part). To access the site, the boat had to enter Charlotte Bay. Due to Argentina's new COVID-related restrictions, most polar cruise companies canceled their Antarctic programs, leaving the expedition team with fewer options to return home. Swan Hellenic intentionally altered Minerva's itinerary to be able to assist the scientists. The "rescue mission" became part of Minerva's second voyage to Antarctica (13-day "Antarctic Peninsula Discovery Cruise"/booking code M07USHUSH08FEB22/12) which departed roundtrip from Ushuaia Argentina (Jan 8-20) and was priced from EUR 15000 per person with double occupancy. The itinerary visited the South Shetland Islands (days 4 and 10) and the Antarctic Peninsula (days 5 thru 9), and featured navigation through Beagle Channel and Drake Passage. |
