23 February 2017Other IncidentsOn February 23, 2017, the cruise ship was docked in Port Piction (Marlborough, New Zealand). At ~2 pm, due to poisonous gas (ammonia) leakage from a nearby building (on Waitohi Wharf) both the docking wharf and the cruise vessel were closed (roughly until 3 pm). All the ship’s windows and doors were shut during that time, and passengers were not allowed to either leave or board the ship. |
12 February 2017Ship Collision / AllisionOn February 12, 2017, due to high winds, in the afternoon the cruise ship broke free from its moorings at Port Timaru (New Zealand) and collided with a cargo vessel (1987-built cement carrier “Milburn Carrier II”/IMO 8606197). As a result of the accident, the cruise vessel was unable to leave the port as scheduled, being detained by the Harbour Master for inspection. The collision followed after the vessel’s all four stern moorings failed. It was swung around, drifted away from the docking wharf, then hit the cargo ship. The accident occurred at ~3.15 pm when a southerly gust of wind (speeds up to 50 mph / 80 kph) caused all the ship’s aft mooring ropes to fail. The collision damaged the cargo vessel’s hull. The cruise ship’s stern hull was also damaged. No injuries were reported. During the emergency, all passengers were disembarked and transported via buses to local hotels. |
