01 July 2023Crew / Passenger DeathsOn the evening of July 1, 2023, a male passenger went overboard from the ship navigating in Loch Ryan (near Cairnryan (Wigtownshire, Dumfries and Galloway Council, Scotland). The overboard happened during the Ireland-Scotland crossing Belfast-Cairnryan (Saturday departure from Belfast at 3:30 pm/14:30 UTC). The alarm was raised at ~5:30 pm/16:30 UTC, when the ship initiated a search and rescue operation (launching a rescue speedboat) assisted by HM Coastguard rescue teams. Soon the man was retrieved from the water, airlifted/winched to a rescue helicopter and flown to Ayr's University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The ship charterer Stena Line confirmed the incident and commented that all standard emergency response procedures were promptly activated. The relevant authorities, including HM Coastguard and Police Scotland, were also duly informed. Stena Superfast VIII resumed its schedule at ~8:30 pm/19:30 UTC. The ship operates the Belfast-Cairnryan route (under long-term charter by Stena Line) since 2011. |
