- pier collision/allision - 2028 (in Port Oarai)
21 January 2018Ship Collision / AllisionOn January 21, 2018, at 13:37 Tokyo time (4:37 UTC) the ship collided with the anchorage near Oarai Port's Wharf 3 (west quay). The structure was contacted at speed 3 knots (3,5 mph / 5,5 kph) soon after passing Oki Breakwater South Lighthouse, as the ferry failed to slow down sufficiently during the docking maneuvers. As result of the collision, the ship sustained hull damages (at the bow) and also the quay. The conducted investigation showed that the accident was due to delayed deceleration of the hybrid CRP propulsion (contra-rotating propellers). Note: Actually, this type of marine accident is called “allision” (striking a fixed object) as opposed to “collision” (striking another vessel). |
