- fire - 2022 (engine room/battery explosion)
- allision - 2023 (collision with Miltenberg's Railway Bridge)
15 November 2023Ship Collision / AllisionIn the afternoon of November 15, 2023, the boat collided with Eisenbahnbrucke uber den Main in Miltenberg (Odenwald Railway Bridge over Main River). Following the collision, the ship got stuck/stranded and unable to maneuver. Due to difficulties in maneuvering towards the pier, while docking Viking Gymir knocked over a steel bollard and also bent a ladder. The incident resulted in hull and superstructure damages, including a significant indentation at the bow, long scratches in the paint, and a destroyed railing (on Upper Deck). No injuries were reported. To assist the vessel, several technicians were sent from the Duisburg-based company "Kadlec & Brödlin GmbH - Schiffselektrik" specializing in ship electronics, propulsion systems and navigation equipment. Additionally, a specialist in hydraulic system repairs and maintenance was sent from the Frankfurt-based company "Ing. Dieter Breitenbach GmbH". On November 16th, travelers reportedly visited Rothenburg ob der Tauber. All passengers were offloaded but they have not been accommodated in local hotels (in either Miltenberg, Wertheim, Wurzburg, or Rothenburg). Note: Actually, this type of marine accident is called “allision” (striking a fixed object) as opposed to “collision” (striking another vessel). |
25 July 2022Fire AccidentIn the evening of July 25, 2022, while docked in homeport Amsterdam (Netherlands), the riverboat reported an explosion in the engine room followed by a small fire. The accident was caused by a malfunction of the battery power system. Amsterdam's fire brigade was summoned at ~6:30 pm. At the time of the accident, the ship was preparing for departure, carrying around 200 passengers plus crew. When the explosion occurred, all passengers were in the Observation Lounge & Bar, being gathered for a short briefing from the staff. All passengers and crew were evacuated to the cruise pier. There were no injured passengers, but 9 crew suffered from smoke inhalation and were treated by the medical personnel. Viking River Cruises first moved all passengers to another ship for dinner, and later all of them were accommodated in a nearby hotel. Dutch fire crews remained to vent the ship and test the air quality before allowing the crew to reboard. Note: The boat's hybrid propulsion system is based on two main diesel engines by Caterpillar (model CAT32-ACERT) plus two batteries. |
