Review of Carnival Cruise Line

CCL-Carnival Cruise Lines (carnival.com) is an American passenger shipping company based in Doral, Florida (Miami suburb). The company was originally privately owned and independent, founded in 1972 by Ted Arison (1924–1999). The initial public offering of 20% common stock in 1987 provided capital for fleet expansion.

Today, CCL is one of 10 brands owned by Carnival Corporation, currently the world's largest passenger shipping company (followed by RCG-Royal Caribbean Group). In 2018, Carnival Corporation controlled approximately 39% of the global cruise market (by revenue) and around 48% of total passengers (39% in 2020). The company fully owns eight brands: CCL, AIDA, Costa, Cunard, HAL-Holland America, P&O UK, Princess, and Seabourn.

CCL currently employs over 40,000 people representing 120 nationalities.

Over a span of 50 years—from March 11, 1972 (CCL's maiden voyage with TSS Mardi Gras out of PortMiami) to March 11, 2022—the company served more than 90 million passengers.

CCL operates the largest fleet within Carnival Corporation and represents over one-fifth of the Group’s global market share. The brand is managed under the Corporation’s North American division. CCL pioneered the concept of affordable, short-break cruises. In 1996, the 101,000-GT Carnival Destiny (now Sunshine) became the world’s largest passenger ship and the first to exceed 100,000 tons.

CCL's current President is Christine Duffy. The company's Senior Vice President is Sarah Beth Reno.

Most CCL ships are Panama-flagged.

In May 2024, Carnival Corporation announced the termination of P&O Australia's operations and the discontinuation of the brand in 2025. Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure remained based in Australia but were transferred to CCL and renamed (Carnival Encounter and Carnival Adventure). Both vessels were taken out of service in March 2025 for unscheduled drydocking before commencing CCL operations in April 2025. The other Carnival Australia ship with year-round deployment in the South Pacific is Carnival Splendor.

Currently (as of 2025), CCL's fleet comprises 29 vessels.

Company changes 2024

(Effective January 1) Available fleetwide:

  • The enhanced "Chef's Table 2.0" (VIP dining hosted by the ship's Executive Chef) features a new menu (with cocktails), hors d'oeuvres, a galley tour, and a multi-course gourmet dinner.
  • "Behind The Fun" (ship tour/behind-the-scenes experience) is now available for pre-cruise/online booking (previously bookable only onboard).
  • The HUB App's Streamlined Debarkation feature simplifies the process by allowing guests to indicate individual time preferences and the number of bags for tag delivery to the stateroom. The option is available on select ships. VIFP members and Suite passengers receive priority debarkation tags.

In February, CCL introduced its exclusive beer, "Lord Nelson's Smooth Sailing Cruising Ale." The partnership with "The Lord Nelson Brewery Hotel" (built in 1815, based in The Rocks, NSW Australia) dates back to June 2014, when the "Thirsty Frog Summer Ale" was launched.

In February, Carnival Corporation ordered CCL’s fourth and fifth EXCEL-class ships from Meyer Werft Papenburg (delivery expected in 2027 and 2028).

In July, three ships (~230,000 GT each) were ordered for CCL. This new class will be designed and constructed by Fincantieri and delivered between 2029–2033.

In August, CCL appointed Ben Clement (with the company since 1996) as Executive VP of Maritime & New Builds. Effective January 2025, he will replace Lars Ljoen, who will assume the role of Chief Maritime Officer at Carnival Corporation.

In October, Carnival Cruise Line Australia appointed Mark Richards as National Sales Manager and Sarah Miller as Key Account Manager.

In December, CCL reappointed Jeremy Schiller as CFO/Chief Financial Officer. From 2022 to 2024, he served as CFO of HAL and Seabourn.

Also in December, CCL increased onboard internet pricing: Social Wi-Fi Plan by 22% (from US$15.30 to US$18.70 per day for pre-cruise purchases), Value Plan by 13% (from US$19.55 to US$22.10 per day for pre-cruise purchases; onboard pricing from US$23 to US$26 per day), and Premium Plan (from US$21.25 to US$23.80 per day for pre-cruise purchases; onboard pricing is US$28 per day).

Company changes 2023

In September, CCL announced that libraries on older ships would be removed during their next scheduled drydocks. Newer EXCEL-class ships were designed without library spaces. Former library areas (previously used for reading or board games) will be repurposed as bars, cafes, live music venues, or additional seating areas adjacent to existing venues.

Since April 1, CCL reintroduced the popular "Behind the Scenes" ship tour fleetwide. This optional tour (priced between $55–$95 per person) lasts approximately 2 to 3.5 hours and includes visits to the Wheelhouse/Navigation Bridge, Engine Control Room, Main Dining Room galley, crew areas (cabins, mess hall, dining room, bar lounge), laundry, and more.

On March 16, CCL became the world's first cruise company to serve 100 million passengers. The milestone was celebrated on Carnival Sunrise in PortMiami. The 100-millionth guests were the Clifford family (Debi and David) from Ohio.

On August 28, the name of CCL’s exclusive Grand Bahama port was revealed: Celebration Key, scheduled to open in July 2025.

As of 2023, 9 of CCL’s 14 U.S. homeports (Miami, Port Canaveral, Tampa, Jacksonville, New York City, Baltimore, Mobile, Galveston, Long Beach/Los Angeles) utilize Facial Biometric Technology. This public-private partnership with CBP (U.S. Customs and Border Protection) reduces debarkation time by approximately 30%. U.S. citizens and eligible foreign nationals who prefer not to use facial biometrics can request a manual document check by a CBP officer in accordance with existing entry procedures.

Company changes 2022

In late December, CCL appointed renowned American chef Emeril John Lagasse (born 1959)—celebrity chef, restaurateur, author, and TV personality—as its Chief Culinary Officer. The announcement stated that his restaurant "Emeril’s Bistro" (originally introduced on Mardi Gras) would be expanded across the fleet.

In October, CCL implemented a fleetwide policy imposing a US$500 fine, plus expenses and detention costs (including local police services and emergency docking fees), for passengers found guilty of unruly behavior onboard.

In September, CCL extended its onboard retail partnership with Starboard Cruise Services—a premier cruise ship retailer and subsidiary of LVMH (founded in 1987)—through 2027. The agreement covers 10 ships: Celebration, Dream, Freedom, Horizon, Legend, Magic, Miracle, Pride, Sunrise, and Sunshine. Starboard has been partnering with CCL since 1992.

On June 22, CCL and Costa Cruises announced the "COSTA by CARNIVAL" cruise program, aimed at CCL’s North American source market. The program features two newbuild Costa ships—Venezia (starting in April 2023, homeporting in New York City, USA) and Firenze (starting in 2024, homeporting in Long Beach/Los Angeles, California USA). Both ships are CCL-managed while operating from the US and were scheduled for drydock refurbishments prior to entering Carnival service.

On June 15, it was announced that Costa Luminosa would be transferred from Costa to CCL in September and renamed "Carnival Luminosa."

On February 3, it was announced that in 2022, CCL’s fleet would retire Ecstasy (built in 1991, 31 years old) and Sensation (built in 1993, 29 years old). This decision led to the following deployment changes:

  • In Jacksonville, Ecstasy was replaced by Carnival Spirit starting April 23. Ecstasy was repositioned to Mobile, AL, and homeported there from March 5 through October 10.
  • Carnival Sensation’s Mobile, Alabama schedule (October 15, 2022, through September 30, 2023) was canceled.
  • In Australia, Carnival Splendor’s schedule (June 10 through September 26, 2022) and Carnival Spirit’s schedule (June 5, 2022, through October 5, 2023) were canceled.
  • Carnival Sensation will not resume operations. Ecstasy’s final voyage for CCL departed on October 10, 2022, from Mobile.

CCL's 50th Anniversary (2022)

In March 2022, to celebrate its "50th Anniversary," CCL scheduled various onboard festivities across 17 themed “Sailabrations” cruises, as well as fleet meetups.

  • On March 5, off Ensenada, Mexico, 2 ships (Miracle and Radiance) rendezvoused.
  • On March 7, off Cozumel, Mexico, 7 ships (Breeze, Ecstasy, Glory, Pride, Sunrise, Vista, and Mardi Gras) rendezvoused.
  • On March 9, off Eleuthera, Bahamas, 6 ships (Conquest, Freedom, Legend, Liberty, Spirit, and Sunshine) rendezvoused.
  • On March 11, off Ensenada, 2 ships (Miracle and Panorama) rendezvoused again.

Each ship hosted its own Lido Deck party during the meetups, featuring live music and entertainment, including the largest "Ship-Tok at Sea" (posted on tiktok.com/@carnival). Additional onboard activities included themed puzzles, fun-fact trivia games, a Build-A-Bear Birthday Party (featuring a special-edition cuddle bear), the Rollin' In Riches gaming event, exclusive fashion collections and retail items, and special Main Dining Room menus (featuring themed food and drinks, an original MDR show, and the Baked Alaska Farewell Parade).

CCL officially celebrated its 50th birthday on March 11, 2022, during Carnival Conquest’s 3-day cruise from Miami to Nassau (March 11–14).

To commemorate the milestone, CCL Brand Ambassador John Heald hosted "Between Two Banners"—a series of interviews with the following guests:

  • (March 21) Terry Thornton – former Senior VP of Nautical and Port Operations
  • (March 23) Vicky Rey – VP of Guest Care and Communications, Stakeholder Engagement, Deputy Ethics and Compliance Officer
  • (March 25) Stefan Christoffersson – VP of Housekeeping, Laundry, and VSP
  • (March 28) Gerald "Gerry" Cahill – CCL’s President & CEO from 2007 to 2014
  • (March 30) Shahnaz Kashanipour – Director of Guest Operations
  • (April 1, 4, and 6) Micky Arison – Corporation’s Chairman (three-part interview)

Company Changes 2021

On June 23, 2021, CCL announced the addition of two ships to its fleet by 2023—an EXCEL-class ship (Carnival Jubilee, 2023-built) and Costa Magica (2004-built). Costa Magica (later substituted with Luminosa) was scheduled for drydock refitting and refurbishment, to be renamed and join CCL in the first half of 2022.

In June, CCL signed a limited-time partnership with Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Kitchen (a delivery-only restaurant) to offer the signature "Straight Up Burger" (priced at US$12). The promotion was available via food delivery apps (Uber Eats, Grubhub, Bite Squad, Waitr, Postmates, and DoorDash) with free delivery. Guy’s Burger Joint (a poolside food bar) was introduced to the fleet in 2011 and, by 2021, was available fleetwide across 24 ships. Each ship serves approximately 1,000 burgers daily—around 8 million per year per ship!

In mid-April, CCL launched "Carnival Edition Family Feud," a cruise-themed version of the classic board game, priced at US$25. It features 150 questions related to CCL and cruise travel.

On February 16, 2021, CCL officially released "Carnival Monopoly," available for online purchase at US$40. This limited-edition board game features cruise-themed content, including Carnival ships as properties, port taxes, and Cruise Director announcements.

Company Changes 2020

Since January 2020, through a partnership with PepsiCo, Carnival’s North American fleet began serving various Pepsi-branded beverages, including sparkling water, energy drinks, iced teas, sodas, and juices (with both no-sugar and low-calorie options), along with Starbucks coffee.

The lineup of PepsiCo beverages includes Bubly (sparkling water), Gatorade (sports drinks), Naked Juice, MTN Dew (carbonated), Pepsi, Pepsi Zero, Pure Leaf (iced teas), Sierra Mist (lemon-lime), and Sierra Mist Zero.

Company Changes 2019

In August, CCL signed an agreement with The Bahamas to develop a new cruise port on Grand Bahama Island. The project, valued at approximately US$100 million, is expected to create around 1,000 jobs.

In November, CCL partnered with Uplift (a "travel now, pay over time" platform). Instead of paying in full at the time of booking, Uplift Pay Monthly allows CCL's customers to pay for their cruise over time—making monthly payments for up to 2 years (24 months). This new option allows guests to secure their ship, stateroom, and itinerary with a predetermined payment plan and fixed monthly amounts. The payment option is available to residents of the US and Canada, for all CCL cruise destinations, and can be used through any travel agent, via Carnival.com, or by contacting the company's call centers. In late November 2019, shop.carnival.com (an online retail store) was launched, offering Carnival-branded merchandise.

In May, CCL partnered with the Harlem Globetrotters (an exhibition basketball team) to become the team's official cruise line sponsor. Carnival-themed activations take place at more than 150 shows each year. In July 2019, CCL entered a partnership with "Clean the World"—a hospitality recycling organization that repurposes hotel soap and amenities. Discarded hygiene products from CCL staterooms are collected and sent to a recycling center ashore, where they are sanitized, melted down, and reprocessed. The newly formed soap bars are not reused onboard but are distributed to vulnerable communities worldwide. As of 2019, Clean the World has recycled and distributed hygiene products to over 127 countries.

In April, CCL expanded its shipboard youth programming fleetwide through an exclusive partnership with Zumbini. The company offers 45-minute, high-energy classes and activities (for children ages 0-4) that combine play, music, and movement. Zumbini classes—created by Zumba and BabyFirst—include group sing-alongs, musical instruments, and educational activities. CCL’s Zumbini program is free of charge, led by the ship’s youth staff, and includes two 30-minute sessions held at Camp Ocean and other venues. The program targets Carnival Penguins (ages 2 to 5) and is available on sailings of 6 days or longer.

In March, CCL signed an exclusive partnership with Lakeland Brewing Company (Florida) to can and keg CCL’s private-label craft beers, which are brewed onboard the Vista and Horizon by a professional brewery team. The three original beers—ThirstyFrog Caribbean Wheat, ParchedPig West Coast IPA, and ParchedPig Toasted Amber Ale—are based on unique recipes and are available fleetwide on tap and in 16-oz cans, as well as at CCL's private port destinations. In October, two additional beers were introduced: ParchedPig Pumpkin Ale and ParchedPig Beach Lager. In mid-March 2019, construction began on the exclusive "Carnival Terminal 3" (CT3) in Port Canaveral, which officially opened in June 2021.

In February, CCL implemented 3D X-ray security scanning at nine of its North American homeports. For the project, which involved the installation of 91 units, CCL contracted "VOTI Detection," a Montreal-based company. The 3D scanners feature advanced imaging and remote diagnostic capabilities, storing image files that can be re-analyzed if needed.

Company changes 2018

In October 2018, the term "tender" (a large boat used for ship-to-shore passenger transportation in ports without berthing facilities) was officially replaced with "water shuttle." Since December 1, 2018, passengers who violate the company's shipboard smoking policy are disembarked at the next port of call. Previously, violators were charged a USD 500 cleaning fee.

With the introduction of the three Vista-class liners (Vista/2016, Horizon/2018, Panorama/2019), CCL debuted several fleet-first features, including the "IMAX Theater at Sea" (an 87-seat cinema as part of the "Carnival Multiplex"), "SkyRide" (an outdoor aerial bicycle ride on a suspended two-track course), and Havana Staterooms (a dedicated cabin area featuring a swimming pool, sundeck, lounge, and lanai balconies).

NEW Carnival-XL ship

On November 15, 2018, the steel-cutting ceremony was held for CCL’s first XL-Class (largest) cruise ship. The 183,900 GT newbuild features a brand-new livery and is LNG-powered.

The shipbuilder is Meyer Werft (Turku Shipyard, Finland). The first vessel, the Carnival Mardi Gras, was scheduled for delivery in 2021 and is homeported in Port Canaveral, Florida. The second vessel, sistership Carnival Celebration, is homeported in Miami starting in November 2022—the year CCL celebrated its 50th Anniversary (on March 11).

The XL-Class design includes a new red-white-navy blue hull, created by New York City-based naval architecture firm "Bluarch Architecture." These new liners are 1,130 ft (344 m) long and have a passenger capacity of 5,200 (lower berths). Among the ship's fleet-first and industry-first innovations is The Ultimate Playground (aft on decks 18-19)—a large, family-friendly outdoor play area featuring the fleet’s largest WaterWorks (aquapark) and an expanded SportSquare (sports complex with a basketball court, ropes course, jogging track, and mini-golf). Also new is the "BOLT Ultimate Sea Coaster," the first roller coaster at sea. Located aft on Deck 19, BOLT was designed and built by Maurer Rides (a Munich, Germany-based company specializing in roller coaster manufacturing). The race track is 244 m (800 ft) long and includes twists, turns, drops, and speeds of up to 64 kph (40 mph). Individual speeds are displayed after each ride. Carnival’s roller coaster is fully electric and allows two riders to race in motorbike-style vehicles 57 m (187 ft) above sea level. The experience offers thrilling 360-degree top-deck ocean views and ends with a high-speed turn around the ship’s funnel (smokestack/chimney).

(NEW) Carnival China cruise brand

In February 2015, Carnival Corporation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Merchants Group for two joint ventures. The MoU outlined a potential partnership that could result in the launch of a new cruise brand (joint shipowner company), along with joint development plans for Chinese seaports and cruise destinations.

  • The MoU's joint venture port plans included the development of both transit and turnaround/homeports within China. China Merchants Group (founded in 1872) is a state-owned company focused on infrastructure and transportation, as well as real estate development and financial services. Currently, Carnival Corporation serves the Chinese market through its Princess and Costa brands.
  • In October 2015, Carnival Corp signed an agreement with Chinese companies SWS (Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co Ltd, a subsidiary of CSSC / China State Shipbuilding Corporation) and China Investment Corp. The USD 3.88 billion deal established the Hong Kong-based joint venture Adora Cruises/CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping to place ship orders with SWS. The company plans to build up to five new vessels per year over the next 15-20 years. All ships will be homeported in China, with technical support and design plans provided by Fincantieri. SWS also builds some of the world's largest container ships (with capacities of up to 21,000 TEUs) for CSCL.

In February 2017, Carnival Corp and CSSC announced an agreement to build two new ships for "CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping Ltd". The deal was officially signed on November 6, 2018.

  • The shipbuilding project had a total value of approximately USD 1.5 billion, excluding options for four additional liners. Additionally, Carnival China purchased two existing liners from Costa Group (Atlantica and Mediterranea).
  • The shipbuilder is SWS. Another joint venture—"CSSC Cruise Technology Development Co Ltd" (a partnership between SWS and Fincantieri)—granted shipbuilding technology licenses and provided technical services to SWS, including supply chain and project management, components, and fundamental marine systems. The new liners' design, based on Fincantieri's CCL VISTA platform, was specifically tailored for Chinese tourists.
  • The first ship was scheduled for delivery in 2023, with a second to follow in 2024. The ships are based on the Vista-Class design, with a gross tonnage of 85,000 and a passenger capacity of around 2,800.

Carnival Cruise Line ships

CCL is best known for implementing advanced marine technologies, innovative ship construction methods, and creative vessel designs. Its customer base is primarily American—30% under the age of 35, 40% between 35 and 55, and 30% over 55.

All CCL ships feature the "Carnival" prefix in their names and are trademarked as "The Fun Ships." Also trademarked is the ship's funnel, which is red-white-blue and shaped like a whale tail. Carnival's vessels offer spacious public areas and staterooms—among the largest at sea—with a wide variety of cabin types across several categories. Notable amenities include Carnival's terry cloth robes and the "Comfort Bed" sleep system, which features deluxe mattresses, linens, duvets, and pillows. Suite guests can even choose from a "pillow menu."

Carnival cruise ship top deck (Breeze, Dream, Magic)

Carnival is renowned for its exceptional cuisine and diverse dining options. The extensive list of venues includes the Main Dining Rooms (offering 5-course meals), Chef's Table (featuring a ship tour and gourmet experience), the reservations-only Supper Club with steakhouse favorites, BlueIguana Cantina (Mexican), Sushi Bar, European-style patisseries and cafes, poolside bars, themed kids' dining, midnight buffets, 24-hour pizza, and room service.

CCL ships offer a wide range of onboard activities—from napkin-folding classes, Vegas-style shows, and galley kitchen tours to lively deck parties, belly-flop contests, and waterslide races. Signature shipboard attractions include the Seaside Theatre (outdoor cinema), Thrill Theatre (3D cinema), disco nightclub, casino (with games and tournaments), stage shows, Playlist Productions, Hasbro Game Show, and Carnival WaterWorks (an aqua park with waterslides).

For sports enthusiasts, Carnival offers the SportSquare, which includes the ropes course SkyCourse, SkyRide, and a basketball court also used for soccer and volleyball. Since October 2016, Carnival Cruise Line ships have featured bocce court activities, made possible by an inflatable court developed by Packaworld (New Zealand). This addition followed successful test runs (on Carnival Glory and Carnival Pride) conducted by the American Bocce Company (USA).

Bocce (also known as bocci) is a game similar to lawn bowling. Traditional bocce courts are wooden and typically measure 60x12 ft (1830x365 cm), making them difficult to install on cruise ships. To solve this, Packaworld developed inflatable "Packabocce" courts, making the game more portable and accessible. These courts come in two sizes: 30x8 ft / 914x244 cm (recreation) and 22x6 ft / 670x180 cm (mini court), and can be set up in minutes.

The inflatable bocce courts are also available in some indoor public spaces (including bars). This onboard activity is offered fleetwide, including on Australia-based ships, where passengers can also enjoy giant board games such as Trivial Pursuit, Guess Who, and Cranium.

SkyRide is an outdoor aerial bicycle ride—a suspended dual-track bike course featured on the newest Vista-class Carnival ships. It is the cruise industry’s first pedal-powered open-air ride, with suspended bikes circling an 800-ft / 245-m long track on the top deck, offering 360-degree panoramic views 150 ft / 46 m above sea level.

Foosball and ping-pong tables are available, along with a walking/jogging track and a fitness center that includes a separate room for yoga, aerobics, and Pilates classes. There's also a mini-golf course and golf cruise packages for avid golfers.

CCL caters to families with exceptional kids' programs. "Camp Ocean" offers a wide range of children’s activities and facilities, including the exclusive "Seuss at Sea" entertainment, featuring the "Green Eggs and Ham" Breakfast served in the MDRs once per voyage through a partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises LP. Meanwhile, parents can relax in various onboard retreats and lounges such as the Carnival Cloud 9 Spa, Serenity Adult Retreat, and themed bars (RedFrog, BlueIguana, Alchemy, Havana, Sports), as well as large swimming pools and whirlpools.

Carnival cruise ship Serenity Retreat (adults-only deck)

Since 2007, Carnival has invested heavily in fleetwide refurbishments and upgrades. The "Evolutions of Fun" initiative, which cost USD 350 million, enhanced 8 Fantasy-class vessels with new open-deck spaces, kid- and family-focused facilities, and the Carnival WaterWorks aquapark featuring waterslides.

On October 6, 2022, Carnival announced a new kids' program in partnership with Cape Canaveral's Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Hosted at Camp Ocean, the NASA-supported "Space Cruisers" program debuted on Carnival Celebration in November. Activities are divided into age groups: "Optimal Orbit" (ages 2–8), "Design Your Own Mission Patch," and "Space Cruisers Rocket Workshop" (ages 6–11), along with family-friendly options like "Mars Base Connect" and "ASTRO!". The Space Cruisers program was rolled out fleetwide by Q2 2023.

The "Fun Ship 2.0" initiative, launched in 2011 at a cost of USD 500 million, introduced new dining venues, redesigned staterooms, themed bars, lounges, and clubs across the fleet. Its largest project was the 2013 transformation of Carnival Destiny into Carnival Sunshine, a USD 155 million refit completed during a 49-day drydock.

This official YouTube video reviews DREAM-class vessels (Breeze, Dream, Magic) and their facilities and amenities.

ATM (cash) machines have been available on all Carnival ships since 2009, provided exclusively by Cardtronics for both guests and crew. In 2016, additional ATMs were installed in crew areas. Each vessel has four ATMs—two located in high-traffic guest areas and two designated for crew use.

Since August 2018, CCL no longer requires guests to complete health questionnaires during check-in. Instead, passengers self-report any illnesses. Health signage is displayed in port terminals to encourage hand hygiene and illness reporting to the crew.

(NEW) Carnival Cruise Gratuities (2023)

As of April 1, 2023, Carnival's daily gratuity rates per person (pp) are as follows:

  • USD 16 pp for standard staterooms (interior, oceanview, balcony, both adults and kids), up from USD 14.50 pp

For Cruises to Nowhere, the daily gratuity is USD 14 pp.

For itineraries visiting Bridgetown, Barbados, all gratuities are prepaid and added during booking.

  • Dining/wait staff: USD 6.40
  • Alternative services (kitchen, entertainment, guest services, and other hotel personnel): USD 2.50

Carnival Shipboard Wi-Fi Plans

In 2017, CCL upgraded its fleetwide Wi-Fi service and introduced the ability to pre-purchase internet packages online.

Starting April 19, 2017, guests could pre-purchase internet plans (initially on Carnival Fascination and Carnival Vista) via the "Manage My Booking" section at Carnival.com. Guests can choose a plan for the entire cruise duration.

Wi-Fi packages are available at discounted rates when purchased for the full voyage or for a 24-hour period.

  • "Social Package" (USD 12.75/day): Provides access to popular apps and websites including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and major airline sites. Snapchat, FaceTime, iMessage, in-app calling, and other websites/apps are not included.
  • "Value Package" (USD 17/day): Grants access to all websites and apps including email, news, banking, sports, weather, and social media. It does not support music/video streaming or Skype calls.
  • "Premium Package" (USD 18.70/day): Offers the fastest internet connection, up to 3x faster than the Value plan (depending on coverage). Supports all apps and websites, streaming services, and Skype video calls.

Since May 2017, fully booked passengers have been able to pre-purchase Wi-Fi plans via the "My Cruise Manager" tab at carnival.com. Note: online Wi-Fi purchases require selecting an internet package that covers the entire voyage.

Daily internet packages are also available onboard.

  • Wi-Fi package: USD 12/day (USD 10.25 if pre-purchased), 24-hour rate USD 16
  • Premium Wi-Fi package: USD 17.70/day (USD 14.88 if pre-purchased), 24-hour rate USD 25

Booked Carnival cruise ship passengers can upgrade from one plan to another and are also allowed to use multiple devices per plan (including the ship's onboard computers), but only one device can be connected at a time. All new Carnival WiFi plans exclude video streaming services (Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime) and do not support WiFi Calling (voice calls via the ship's Wi-Fi network) or FaceTime (Apple's video calling service). Printing services onboard are provided at no additional charge.

Carnival "Future Cruise" booking

In May 2017, Carnival Cruise Line began offering new incentives to guests sailing on current voyages who book their next cruise while still onboard.

  • Guests can book a future Carnival cruise either while on the ship or within two weeks after their current cruise. Bookings ashore can be made through a travel agent or the Carnival HUB app, while onboard bookings are handled by the Loyalty and Cruise Rep. Prior to May 2017, future cruise bookings were only available through onboard representatives.
  • At the time of booking, guests are eligible for perks such as a reduced deposit, a two-category cabin upgrade, and 20% off "Early Saver" rates with price protection.
  • Guests who change their cruise date forfeit their onboard credit. This credit is also forfeited if they rebook due to a price drop. Previously, the onboard credit amount varied based on the itinerary length. Now, it is a flat rate of USD 25 per person (up to USD 50 per cabin), except for suite staterooms, which receive USD 50 per person (up to USD 100 per cabin).
  • Travel agents can include their clients in a group booking with this offer.
  • Carnival's "Friends and Family" vouchers are no longer available. These used to allow others sailing with you to receive the same discount.

Carnival is the only cruise line that allows its guests to take advantage of the "Future Cruise Vacation" promotion up to two weeks after the voyage ends (debarkation).

In late December 2018, Carnival signed a contract with Speedcast (the world’s largest global satellite communications provider) to enhance the fleet’s connectivity at sea. Through this agreement, Carnival increased its fleet's bandwidth to deliver the highest-quality Internet at sea. Utilizing 40 mini-satellites, Carnival now operates the world’s largest maritime satellite network. Specifically for Carnival, Speedcast developed the TrueBeam system, which continuously monitors for potential signal disruptions and instantly reroutes the signal to avoid interruptions. These interruptions may be caused by weather ("rain fade"), overcrowded networks, or line-of-sight obstructions.

Carnival fly-cruise deals Fly2Fun

Since 2015, Carnival has offered a flight-and-cruise program (branded Fly2Fun) that provides guests with more choice, convenience, and value when booking flights in conjunction with their cruise.

Fly2Fun deals allow travelers to customize flight reservations with options such as preferred departure airports, flight schedules, airline selection, and class of service. Confirmations are provided once the reservation is made. Flights can also be arranged to allow for pre- or post-cruise hotel stays.

  • The Fly2Fun program is backed by Carnival's "Flight Protection", which guarantees that if a guest misses the cruise departure due to airline mechanical issues or weather delays, Carnival will fully cover airfare and all related transportation, meals, and hotel expenses needed to rejoin the ship at the next port of call.
  • The Fly2Fun program offers two options: "Restricted Air" and "Flexible Air".
  • With Flexible Air, guests (or their travel agents) can book flights up to four days before departure using the "Book Now–Pay Later" option. Payment for flights is collected with the cruise's final payment. There are no fees for air changes made more than 60 days before departure.
  • With Restricted Air, flight tickets are non-refundable and must be paid in full at the time of booking. Change fees are determined by the airline’s policy once the tickets are issued.

Fly2Fun (Carnival’s fly-cruise deals) can only be booked via phone. After the cruise reservation is made, customers can call "1-800-CARNIVAL" to arrange flight bookings.

In November 2018, Carnival partnered with American Airlines to offer an exclusive fly-cruise package.

  • Members of the airline's loyalty program (AAdvantage) can earn up to 10,000 miles on voyages. AAdvantage cardholders can earn up to 20,000 miles.
  • The deal includes the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Card and the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard.
  • AAdvantage members earn 1 mile per dollar spent on Carnival cruises, while AAdvantage cardholders earn 2 miles per dollar spent.
  • Miles are awarded per stateroom, but only one passenger per booking can earn rewards. AAdvantage cardholders must book their cruise through "American Airlines Cruises" using their card to receive the additional mile per dollar spent.
  • This exclusive offer was available on Carnival voyages from November 1, 2018, through August 31, 2021.

In late February 2020, a new Fly2Fun option was introduced—allowing customers to secure flight arrangements (Flexible Air or Restricted Air) immediately after completing their cruise booking online. The upgraded Fly2Fun lets booked guests select flight dates and preferred airlines and receive instant confirmation online.

Carnival's "Great Vacation Guarantee"

Since 2013, Carnival has offered the cruise industry's strongest vacation guarantee—"Great Vacation Guarantee." Launched with the Victory ship’s cruise from Miami on September 12, 2013, this brand-building initiative allows Carnival passengers to end their cruise early if unsatisfied and receive a 110% refund in onboard credit. And that's not all!

  • Unhappy guests also receive free air transportation home.
  • Free ground transportation from the next port of call.
  • Free hotel accommodations if needed.
  • USD 100 in onboard credit toward a future Carnival cruise.
  • Booking shore excursions through Carnival offers the best value in terms of cost, service quality, and guaranteed ship departure/arrival times.

The only requirement is that passengers must report their dissatisfaction while onboard and within the first 24 hours after embarkation.

Carnival HUB app

The HUB app is a free mobile download that allows onboard chatting between Carnival passengers and provides access to ship-related information. A USD 5 fee per device per cruise is required to activate the chat feature. All other functions are free of charge.

The HUB app was last updated in June 2017 and now includes new features such as daily weather forecasts, dining menus, helpful tips (dress codes, onboard event schedules, deck plans, port information), and a refreshed design.

The HUB app also enables passengers to check their Sail & Sign onboard account, view maps, browse scheduled events, explore dining and drinking options, and add favorites. On select ships, tours and shore excursions can also be purchased through the app. The app is available for both Apple and Android devices.

Carnival EasyPay

"Carnival EasyPay," introduced in June 2017, is Carnival Cruise Line's pay-over-time program that allows guests to book a cruise and pay in three monthly installments.

  • This industry-first program is a hassle-free payment option that automatically deducts cruise payments from the credit card on file. Payments are applied to the remaining balance over three months—interest-free.
  • After the initial deposit, the remaining balance is charged in three equal, automatic monthly payments on the designated date.
  • Guests can enroll in "Carnival EasyPay" online at carnival.com or by phone.
  • Travel agents can also sign up to process payments on behalf of their clients.

Since 2017, Carnival Cruise Line has accepted PayPal as a digital payment method available from any device. Through PayPal, customers can securely choose their payment method—credit card, debit card, bank account, or PayPal balance.

PayPal can be used by cruise passengers to make initial deposits or pay any remaining balance. In addition to PayPal, Carnival accepts all major credit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, Diner's Club, and MasterPass.

PayPal allows Carnival guests to make online payments quickly and securely. It can be used for any Carnival cruise itinerary lasting 3 to 15 days, visiting both U.S. and international ports and destinations.

(NEW) Carnival Cruise Passengers Debarkation Policy

In August 2018, the company revised its debarkation policy for passengers.

  • Only guests who exceed the duty-free allowance must complete one U.S. Customs Declaration Form per household, including family members traveling together and residing at the same address.
  • On the day before debarkation, new zone-numbered luggage tags are made available in a designated onboard area (listed in Carnival's Debarkation Flyer). This does not apply to self-assist debarkation guests.
  • Passengers may collect luggage tags with their preferred debarkation time (subject to availability). Each tag must be completed and attached to the luggage. It is recommended not to disembark until your zone is called, as your luggage will not be available for pickup.
  • Guests using the new luggage tag system must place their luggage outside their stateroom (in the hallway) the night before debarkation (between 10 pm and midnight).
  • To avoid confusion, guests must remove any boarding luggage tags and leave only the zone-numbered tags.
  • Passengers with confiscated items can reclaim them starting at 6:30 am on debarkation day in the designated area.
  • Upon debarkation, each passenger must present their Sign & Sail card for scanning by ship security to track when the entire cruise ship has been cleared of travelers.

Carnival ship lifeguards

In April 2017, at the CLIA Cruise360 conference in Fort Lauderdale, CCL's President reaffirmed that the company would not be adding shipboard lifeguards in the near future, stating that "the responsibility for pool safety must be with the parents onboard and our employees."

Each CCL ship has three full-time attendants at the WaterWorks facility/aqua park with slides. These attendants are trained in pool safety, CPR, and first aid. Still, the most effective safety system remains "vigilance and awareness."

  • For comparison, NCL-Norwegian began employing certified lifeguards (initially on its largest vessels) in summer 2017. By 2018, lifeguards were present fleetwide. This move made NCL the third major cruise company to have lifeguards onboard, following Disney and Royal Caribbean. NCL lifeguards are stationed only at family pools during scheduled swimming hours and are trained and certified by the American Red Cross. The line also offers complimentary swim vests for adults and children, available at the Lido Deck towel station during the day.
  • Since 2015, NCL has tested CCTV monitoring at family pools on its largest ships. The addition of full-time lifeguards was implemented to enhance safety on pool decks. However, lifeguards are not a substitute for parental supervision—parents or legal guardians remain the primary safeguard against onboard accidents.
  • RCI Royal Caribbean has employed shipboard lifeguards since February 2017 as part of its "water safety program." RCI lifeguards wear distinct uniforms (bright red and white) and are stationed at every pool onboard, including the adults-only Solarium during operating hours.
  • Disney Cruise Line has had certified lifeguards onboard since 2013.

"Fun Ship Freddy" is Carnival's mascot, modeled after the company’s iconic funnel design.

Former Carnival liners

All vessel names begin with "Carnival" and are also referred to as "Carnival Fun Ships." The company’s first liner was the second-hand vessel "MS Mardi Gras."

Carnival Mardi Gras cruise ship

Below is a list of former Carnival ships no longer in the fleet. The years each vessel served CCL are shown in parentheses.

  • MS MARDI GRAS (1972-1993), Carnival's first cruise ship, originally the 1961-built ocean liner "Empress of Canada." Scrapped in 2003. Tonnage: 27,300 GT; Passenger capacity: 1,240. Former names: Olympic, Star of Texas, Lucky Star, Apollo, Apollon.

On May 10, 2018, Carnival officially opened its Fleet Operations Center in Miami. The 35,000-ft² facility allows real-time monitoring of all ships in the fleet. Its centerpiece is a 74-ft (22.5 m) long video wall made up of 57 LED screens. The center processes data including itineraries, ship locations, weather, logistics, environmental status, and guest operations. An interactive world map shows the current positions of all Carnival Corporation ships across all brands. The center is staffed 24/7. Similar facilities are also located in Seattle and Hamburg.

Cancellations made before the final payment were penalty-free, unless under a non-refundable deposit or promotional fare.

IMPORTANT: In mid-June 2020, Carnival Corporation (CCL’s parent company) announced plans to sell 13 ships in FY2020, accelerating fleet optimization that was previously planned over 3-5 years.

  • The list of scrapped ships includes Carnival Inspiration (built 1996, age 24) and Carnival Fantasy (built 1990, age 30). On July 23, Carnival confirmed that Fantasy and Inspiration were sold but not for scrapping. The same announcement stated that Fascination and Imagination would be placed into cold lay-up (long-term no-sail) status.
  • Carnival Fascination’s 2020-2021 program, homeported in San Juan (Puerto Rico) and Bridgetown (Barbados), was canceled. Plans to relocate the ship to Mobile, AL, in 2022 were also canceled. On September 16, it was announced that Carnival Fascination had been sold (to an undisclosed buyer, hopefully not for scrap).

Itinerary of Carnival Cruise Line

In April 2025, CCL/Carnival Australia's fleet was joined by two ships currently operated by P&O Cruises Australia — the Pacific Encounter/Carnival Encounter and Pacific Adventure/Carnival Adventure. Both vessels were renamed and taken out of service in March 2025 for unscheduled drydockings. The other Carnival Australia ship with year-round deployment in the South Pacific is the Carnival Splendor.

Carnival Australia's 4-ship fleet comprises 3 year-round deployed (Carnival Adventure, Carnival Encounter, Carnival Splendor) and one seasonal ship (Carnival Luminosa). In 2025, CCL anticipates to serve 0,5+ million tourists in the region.

Former CCL Vessels (Scrapped 2020–2022)

Carnival Fantasy (built in 1990, 30 years old) and Carnival Inspiration (built in 1996, 24 years old) were sold for scrap in July 2020. Carnival Imagination (built in 1995, 25 years old) was sold in August 2020 and later dismantled at Aliaga, Turkey.

Carnival Fascination (built in 1994, 28 years old) was sold in August 2020 and scrapped in February 2022 at Gadani, Pakistan.

In 2022, CCL retired the Carnival Ecstasy (built in 1991, 31 years old) and Carnival Sensation (built in 1993, 29 years old).

Itinerary Changes

CCL-Carnival established cruise operations in China through a partnership with its local subsidiary, Costa Asia, which has operated in China since 2008.

As of February 2022, representing 90% of CCL's American capacity, the USA-based homeport operations included the following ships and ports:

Note: From 2010 to 2024, CCL was the only major cruise line to homeport in Charleston SC year-round.

In summer 2025–2026 (starting May 2025), CCL will homeport three ships in LA/Long Beach — Firenze, Panorama, and Radiance — offering 4- to 8-day roundtrip itineraries to destinations along the Mexican Riviera (Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán) and Baja California (Ensenada, La Paz).

Carnival cruises to Cuba

Carnival expanded its Cuba cruise program with 23 new itineraries (3- to 5-day) to Havana in 2020, operated by five ships from four US East Coast homeports — Carnival Triumph (from Fort Lauderdale), Carnival Sunshine (from Charleston SC), and Carnival Sensation (from Miami). Carnival Sunshine was the largest cruise ship to ever visit Havana and the first to sail to Cuba from Charleston SC. The new itineraries included:

  • Carnival Sunshine: eight 5-day voyages featuring Freeport and Havana, departing January 6, February 3 and 17, March 2, 16 and 30, April 13 and 27, 2020.
  • Carnival Triumph-Sunrise: eight 5-day itineraries with an overnight in Havana and a day visit to Nassau, departing January 11, February 8 and 22, March 7 and 21, April 4 and 18, 2020, plus a 5-day cruise with an overnight in Havana and a call at Half Moon Cay departing January 20, 2020.

Note: Under current Cuban law, US citizens born in Cuba are not permitted to visit the country (including by cruise). Regardless of US citizenship status, Cuba-born individuals were previously denied booking cruises visiting Cuban ports. However, in April 2016, after negotiations between Carnival Corporation and the Cuban government, ships were allowed to carry Cuban-born passengers. These travelers had already been permitted to enter Cuba via charter flights from the USA. Carnival’s fathom brand launched cruises from Miami to Cuba in May 2016 with the P&O UK ship Adonia (now Azamara Pursuit). The brand ceased operations in April 2017.

Alaska Airlines offers regular nonstop flights to Havana from Los Angeles (California, USA). JetBlue operates 80-minute flights from Fort Lauderdale (Florida) to Havana for under USD 100. Previously, travel from the US to Cuba was only possible via charter flights.
