Review of MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises Ltd (MSC Crociere, msccruises.com/en-gl) is a passenger shipping company headquartered in Miami, Florida, USA (since 2024). The company is a fully-owned subsidiary of MSC Group/Mediterranean Shipping Company (founded in 1960, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland), currently ranked as the world's second-largest containership company (after Maersk).

MSC Crociere is the world's largest privately-owned cruise company. As of Q4 2020, MSC ranked as the third-largest cruise ship owner globally (by combined fleet passenger capacity at ~13%), behind Carnival Corporation (39%) and RCG-Royal Caribbean Group (24%).

The company's current management team is led by Pierfrancesco Vago (Executive Chairman of MSC Group's Cruise Division), Gianni Onorato (Global CEO), and Emilio La Scala (President and Managing Director).

Ruben Rodriguez is MSC Cruises USA's CEO. Effective April 30, 2025, he will retire from the post of MSC USA's President and will be succeeded by Lynn Torrent (MSC Cruises USA's former Executive VP & CCO/Chief Commercial Officer) on May 1, 2025.

In 2021, MSC launched its travel brand EXPLORA JOURNEYS, with a separate fleet of smaller luxury ships. EXPLORA JOURNEYS' main competitor in the European market is Viking OCEAN.

Between its official launch in 2003 and July 2019, MSC served over 20 million passengers. MSC is also the world's fastest-growing cruise company, with a USD 20.5 billion investment plan (2017-2027) for building 17 new vessels and expanding its fleet to 29 vessels.

The parent company, MSC Group, was founded and is owned by its current Chairman Gianluigi Aponte (born 1940). Since 2014, the company's President and CEO has been his son, Diego Aponte, while his daughter, Alexa Aponte Vago, serves as CFO. MSC entered the cruise market in 1988. MSC also owns Going2Italy, an Italian tour operator founded in 1982.

MSC's main competitor in the Mediterranean is Costa Cruises.

Company History

Founded by Achille Lauro as "Lauro Lines" (also known as Flotta Lauro), MSC entered the cruise shipping business in the 1960s. Initially, MSC operated two ships: Achille Lauro (IMO 5390008, launched as "Willem Ruys") and Angelina Lauro (IMO 5264077, launched as "Oranje"). Angelina Lauro (1939-1979) was destroyed by fire in St. Thomas, USVI in 1979. Achille Lauro (1947-1994) sank off the coast of Somalia due to an onboard fire.

In 1985, Achille Lauro was hijacked by members of the Palestinian Liberation Front, which led to a decline in passenger numbers. Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) purchased Flotta Lauro in 1989 and renamed it "StarLauro Cruises." Achille Lauro caught fire and sank in 1994. In 1995, the company changed its name to "MSC Cruises." The fleet's oldest liner, the 1982-built MSC Melody, was sold in November 2013 and scrapped in September 2018 (as MS Qing).

In 2014, MSC announced that its four Lirica-class ships would undergo extensive refits and drydock refurbishments under the company's "Renaissance Program," with a budget of USD 273 million. As part of this project, all four vessels (Armonia, Lirica, Opera, Sinfonia) were extended by 25 meters (80 feet).

Ship reconstruction was carried out at the Fincantieri shipyard in Palermo, Sicily from August 31, 2014, to November 17, 2015.

MSC cruise ship stretching (Armonia, Lirica, Opera, Sinfonia)

Since 2021, all MSC cruise ship refurbishment projects have been carried out at Palumbo Malta Shipyard (50% co-owned by MSC). The Palumbo Group also operates shipyards in France (Marseille) and Italy (Ancona, Naples, and Savona).

Most of MSC's fleet operates in Europe (Mediterranean and Baltic). The company's other strong markets include the USA (Caribbean), Canada/New England, East Asia, South America, and South Africa. Due to the international passenger base, shipboard announcements are generally made in Italian, Spanish, French, German, and English. Onboard dining is fixed with assigned seatmates, and optional dining includes a Lido buffet restaurant, sushi, and Italian eateries.

Globally, MSC owns and operates several cruise terminals in the USA (Terminals AA/AAA at PortMiami, Florida), Italy (Palacrociere Terminals in Genoa and Civitavecchia-Rome), Spain (Helix Cruise Center in Barcelona), and South Africa (Durban Cruise Terminal).

MSC liners offer exceptional evening entertainment, including classical concerts, jazz, contemporary dance music, and circus-style acrobatics. Voyages are typically priced at value-oriented levels, but the ships offer a wide range of modern vacation amenities and services that come with extra charges, such as port shuttle buses, a la carte restaurant menus, and more.

2025

Effective July 1, MSC will introduce new benefits for Aurea-booking passengers, including priority services (disembarkation, tendering), complimentary replenishment of the first set of cabin minibar beverages, a coffee machine (with daily replenished capsules), daily turndown service (with chocolates), complimentary ironing services (two per voyage), upgraded in-cabin amenities (100% cotton bathrobes, plush slippers, premium bed linens, and MED by MSC bath products/shampoo, conditioner, lotion, body wash).

Company Changes 2024

In January, it was announced that MSC will start year-round homeporting operations from Galveston, TX, in November 2025 (ship Seascape, 7-night roundtrips departing on Sundays). In the same month, MSC began homeporting in NYC, New York (ship Meraviglia).

In mid-January, MSC Group moved its operational headquarters to Downtown Miami (Block 55 at Sawyer's Walk/Overtown). The new facility (130,000-ft2/12,080-m2 office space) now houses the company's three divisions: MSC Cargo (container ships/logistics), MSC Cruises (passenger liners), and Explora Journeys (expedition ships).

In February, Elia Congiu was appointed as fleet's COO/Chief Operating Officer (having been with MSC since 2013, previously serving as Chief HR Officer/Human Resources).

In late February, MSC introduced the "Open Booking" program, allowing passengers on current cruises to reserve a future cruise without committing to a specific vessel/itinerary/date. The program complements MSC's existing "Future Cruise" (onboard booking) program, introduced in 2023. The "Open Booking" option requires a reduced deposit payment (USD 100/EUR 100/GBP 100 per person) while on board. The customer receives a certificate that allows up to a 12-month period to select the next MSC voyage. If the ship and departure date are chosen within 60 days of making the onboard open booking, the customer will receive up to USD 200/EUR 200/GBP 200 in OBC (onboard credit per stateroom). If the booking is made within a year, the customer will receive up to USD 100 in OBC. MSC's open booking is also transferable and can be gifted to a family member or friend before choosing the ship or departure date.

In February, MSC banned smoking and vaping in the Casino on two ships (Virtuosa and Euribia), converting the gaming lounge into a smoke-free venue. On two other ships (Seascape and Seashore), a separate smoking-allowed Casino Lounge was introduced.

In April, Neil Palomba (with MSC since 1996) was appointed MSC Cruises USA's Executive VP of Operations, managing MSC's USA-based fleet, including Ocean Cay, Bahamas. Josef Jungwirth, formerly with Sandals Resort International and RCI/Royal Caribbean International, was appointed as MSC Cruises USA's VP of Food and Beverage Operations.

In May, MSC expanded its fleetwide shipboard family program. The new activities and services include Extended Baby Care Services (for infants 6 months to 2 years old, in collaboration with Chicco), Doremiland Open House and Family Party (held once per cruise), new Family Game Shows (MasterChef at Sea Juniors, Break the Wall, MSC Dance Crew, plus two new - World Quest/geography-based trivia game, and Caravaggio/art-themed spy game), extended Teenager Club Hours (12-17 years old/open between 10 AM-1 PM, and 3 PM-midnight on sea days, and 3 PM-midnight on port days), Guinness World Record Activities (families can participate in quiz shows and win prizes), and MSC Foundation Day (in collaboration with the MSC Foundation/marine conservation initiatives, with 1-hour sessions allowing kids to learn about environmental topics).

In November, MSC Voyagers Club introduced its elite/highest level, Blue Diamond. Positioned above the loyalty program's Classic, Silver, Gold, and Diamond levels, the Blue Diamond tier offers perks such as priority embarkation check-in, dedicated luggage drop-off service (MSC Yacht Club desk), "My Choice" (flexible dining times) in the MDR, complimentary Wi-Fi, free shuttle transportation (select ports), exclusive meet-and-greet events (with the Captain/officer), and priority tender boat access. MSC's Blue Diamond status is reserved exclusively for MSC cruisers and cannot be achieved through MSC's Status Match Program.

Company Changes 2023

In May, MSC Foundation signed a partnership with NatureMetrics (a provider of biodiversity monitoring data) to collect data on marine species during voyages. Through MSC's "eBioAtlas" project, the collected samples (from seawater) are sent to NatureMetrics for analysis using eDNA.

In June, MSC signed a long-term agreement with Gasum Oy (a Finnish state-owned energy company founded in 1994) for the fleet's LNG bunkering operations in the Baltic. The deal was signed by Linden Coppell (MSC's VP of Sustainability & ESG/Environmental, Social, and Governance) and Mika Wiljanen (Gasum's CEO).

MSC Explora Journeys (with a total investment of approximately EUR 3.5 billion) officially began commercial operations in July 2023, with Explora I's maiden voyage on July 17th.

In October, MSC signed an agreement with Shell Western LNG BV (part of Shell plc, the world's second-largest oil and gas company, after ExxonMobil) to provide LNG for the ship Euribia. The deal was signed by Pierfrancesco Vago and Tahir Faruqui (Shell LNG's General Manager). Euribia's first LNG bunkering took place in Port Rotterdam.

Since November 15th, the shipboard children's and teen's clubs (fleetwide, for kids ages 12 to 17) have operated with extended opening hours and longer live entertainment (8 hours daily). The company's expanded youth programming also includes new organized and supervised activities (sports, aquapark entertainment, kids-themed dinners, a different game show for teens every night, followed by a disco).

For 2023, MSC reported serving approximately 4.1 million cruisers (on 22 ships maintained by 46,006 crew members from 137 nationalities), 7,669 operating days, and 26,845,167 million ALBDs (Available Lower Berth Days). Throughout 2023, MSC operated 385 itineraries (visiting destinations in 102 different countries) and offered 2,150 different shore excursions.

Company Changes 2022

In mid-March, MSC Group announced a partnership with Travelife Ltd for EXPLORA JOURNEYS' shore excursion program. "Travelife for Tour Operators" allows tour companies and travel agents access to the company's online management system (with 16 sustainability modules), featuring excursion checklists, planning tools, and examples of best sustainability practices from the travel and tourism industries.

In late March, MSC became the Official Cruise Partner of "Formula 1".

In August, the entire MSC fleet received "ISO 21070:2017" certification (issued by the International Organization for Standardization) for marine environment protection. The certification specifies onboard procedures for waste management practices (collection, separation, treatment, and storage).

For the winter 2022-2023 season (December through April), MSC introduced fly-cruise packages from Brazil to the Caribbean. In partnership with Brazilian airlines, MSC provided Brazilian tourists with the opportunity to enjoy affordable 6-hour chartered flights from São Paulo (Guarulhos Airport) to Fort-de-France, Martinique (Aime Cesaire Airport). In Martinique, passengers boarded the ship (MSC Seaside) for 7-day roundtrip Caribbean voyages, then flew back to Brazil. MSC's Brazil-to-Caribbean fly-cruise packages also included bus transfers (airport-to-cruise port-to-airport). This offer was available again for the winter season 2023-2024, again on MSC Seaside.

Company Changes 2021

In June 2021, MSC officially launched its luxury brand, "Explora Journeys."

For the summer 2021 season (July-October), MSC chartered flights (over 26,000 seats) to offer fly-cruise packages via partnerships with Europe's largest airlines, including Iberia (Spain), Alitalia (Italy), Air France, Eurowings (Germany), and Neos (Italy). This guaranteed accessible airports and convenient flight times for accessing the homeports (embarkation ports) of 6 ships deployed in the Western Mediterranean (Grandiosa, Seaside), Eastern Mediterranean (Splendida, Orchestra, Magnifica), and the Baltic (Seaview). The package deals also included airport-to-ship bus transfers and COVID health insurance (EUR 25 per person, by Europ Assistance).

On October 6, 2021, MSC opened bookings for Magnifica's Northern European winter 2021-2022 season, marking the company's first-ever winter season in the Baltic Sea. Starting November 14th, the program offered 7-night roundtrips from all call ports in the itinerary (Hamburg, Ijmuiden-Amsterdam, Zeebrugge-Bruges, Le Havre-Paris, Southampton-London) with up to 12-hour port stays.

Company Changes 2020

On July 30, 2020, MSC Cruises Ltd and Palumbo Group formed a 50-50 joint venture company to operate Palumbo Malta Shipyard (in Citta Cospicua). The Palumbo shipyard has 4 drydocks and will be used for refurbishments and general maintenance on MSC ships (passenger and cargo) as well as vessels from other cruise and ferry companies. The facilities will be updated to handle LNG-powered ships. The deal was signed by Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC Cruises' Executive Chairman) and Antonio Palumbo (Palumbo Group's founder and Chairman).

In late November 2020, MSC signed a long-term agreement with ABP Southampton for preferential docking rights. The deal starts in summer 2021 with the homeporting of MSC Magnifica at Southampton's newest, fifth passenger terminal. This agreement mandates that MSC homeport at least one ship in Southampton every year.

Company Changes 2019

In May 2019, MSC became the industry's first mainstream cruise company with a permanent office in Canada (Mississauga, Ontario). MSC Cruises Canada's new office is staffed by 15 employees (full-time) and led by Ian Patterson (Country Manager). With the Canadian office, MSC also launched two new websites: MSCCruises.ca (for consumers) and MSCbook.com/ca (for travel agents). Both websites debuted in English and were later upgraded to include French language versions. MSC Cruises Canada has a bilingual call center and provides bilingual materials (brochures, flyers) for potential clients and travel agencies.

In early December 2019, MSC signed a 5-year sponsorship deal with Japanet for V-Varen Nagasaki—a Japanese professional football club owned by Japanet (TV shopping channel). As of 2020, the company also partnered with professional football clubs Chelsea FC (London, England), Paris Saint-Germain FC (Paris, France), and SSC Napoli (Naples, Italy).

Company Changes 2018

Since September 2018, MSC has held an exclusive partnership with "Mohegan Sun"—a casino and gambling complex in Uncasville, Connecticut, USA, operated by the Mohegan Tribe and located on reservation land along the Thames River. Through this deal, MSC's Voyagers Club (loyalty program) was matched with Mohegan Sun's Momentum program. Momentum members receive exclusive cruise perks (including booking discounts, priority embarkation and disembarkation, and onboard amenities). MSC's shipboard casino program offers customers the chance to play on over 1,300 different slot machines fleetwide, plus various table games. Onboard casino rewards also include specialty dining, spa treatments, and booking discounts. Mohegan Sun loyalty program members receive the corresponding MSC status based on their current casino card levels.

In mid-October 2018, MSC announced plans to eliminate single-use plastics fleetwide by March 2019. The list of items to be eliminated includes bags, cups, cutlery, toothpicks, aprons, stirrers, drink mixers, and coffee lids. By the end of 2018, these items would be replaced with 100% compostable and biodegradable substitutes made from renewable resources, such as corn-based polylactic acid, paper, bamboo, and other organic materials. Additionally, shipboard drinks are no longer served with straws.

In late November 2018, MSC signed an exclusive partnership with Chelsea Football Club to become its official global cruise partner from January 2019 through June 2024. The deal includes LED advertising at Stamford Bridge, the football stadium in Fulham, West London. As part of the agreement, Chelsea FC representatives attended MSC Bellissima's naming ceremony in March 2019, where Chelsea FC memorabilia was displayed aboard the new ship.

New Ships

In 2015, MSC ordered four newbuilds from STX France and Fincantieri Italy, with an option for three more units. The first two vessels were delivered in 2017: Meraviglia (May) and Seaside (November).

MSC Seaside-class cruise ship

On February 1, 2016, MSC announced plans to build two "Meraviglia Plus"-class units, each with a maximum capacity of 6,300 passengers. The newbuilds (Grandiosa/2019, Virtuosa/2021, Euribia/2023) feature 200 additional cabins and are 16 meters (50 feet) longer compared to Meraviglia-class ships, with a total of 2,444 staterooms. The construction of the last unit, Euribia, began on June 28, 2021.

The first Meraviglia-Plus vessel, Grandiosa, was delivered in November 2019, and the second, Virtuosa, followed in February 2021. Key features of the Meraviglia-Plus class include the first-at-sea Fine Art Museum with original artworks, an expanded indoor Promenade (111 meters / 364 feet long), two additional restaurants, and a larger outdoor LED screen (95x6 meters / 280x20 feet). MSC partnered exclusively with both Samsung (for the technology) and Cirque du Soleil (for live show programming).

In November 2017, MSC ordered two more Seaside-EVO class units from Fincantieri, valued at EUR 1.8 billion. These ships are larger (16 meters longer, 17,330 GT tons heavier, and capable of carrying 467 more passengers) compared to the Seaview-Seaside class. Deliveries were scheduled for May 2021 (Seashore) and November 2022 (Seascape).

MSC Cruises Seaside-EVO class ship

In early August 2018, MSC signed a EUR 1.5 billion (USD 1.74B) financing agreement for both Seaside-EVO vessels, in partnership with a syndicate of lender banks (Unicredit, BNP Paribas, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti). The Italian export credit agency SACE SIMEST fully backed the credit line. With the addition of the Seaside EVO class, MSC had made an unprecedented investment of EUR 10.5 billion in 12 new vessels scheduled for delivery by 2026.

On November 30, 2017, during Seaside's launch, Marlink, the world's largest independent satellite internet provider, provided over 0.5 gigabits per second of throughput via its Sealink VSAT network. This record-breaking internet speed on Seaside was enabled by Intelsat's new EpicNG satellites. As of 2017, Marlink operated 25 satellites and 32 overlapping beams as part of its Sealink network.

On June 14, 2018, MSC announced an order with STX France for the fifth Meraviglia-class unit (delivery in 2023), which would feature dual-fuel LNG-powered engines. With this order, MSC had 13 newbuilds under construction or on order (2017–2026), five of which were LNG-powered. The announcement was made at the St-Nazaire shipyard and was attended by Bruno Le Maire, the French Minister of Economy and Finance, and Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC's Executive Chairman. The ceremony celebrated three major milestones: Virtuosa's steel-cutting, Grandiosa's keel-laying, and Bellissima's float-out. This was the first time in the shipyard's history that three vessels from a single shipowner were under construction simultaneously.

On October 18, 2018, MSC signed a memorandum of agreement with Fincantieri for four EXPLORA class ultra-luxury expedition ships, valued at over EUR 2 billion. Compared to MSC's main fleet, the EXPLORA units are smaller (64,000 GT tons, 500 staterooms). The first ship will enter service in 2023, followed by the remaining three in 2024, 2025, and 2026. The signing ceremony was attended by Pierfrancesco Vago and Giuseppe Bono, Fincantieri's CEO.

A fun fact: Sophia Loren, the Italian film actress born in 1934, is MSC's traditional Godmother, naming each newbuild since 2003 (MSC Lirica).

(NEW) MSC Silenseas Ships by STX France

On January 20, 2020, MSC and Chantiers de l'Atlantique (STX France) signed a memorandum of understanding for the development of a sail-powered cruise ship prototype. This new class will be based on the Silenseas concept, introduced by STX France in 2018, combining sails with dual-fuel marine engines.

new sailing cruise ship design (STX France Silenseas)

The new MSC cruise vessel will be able to sail with a minimum wind speed of 15 knots (28 km/h) and at a wind angle of over 50 degrees. The current design features a gross tonnage of 23,000, a length overall (LOA) of 210 meters (689 feet), and a passenger capacity of 300 (150 staterooms).

The sailing ship can reach speeds of 12 knots (14 mph / 22 km/h) under sail in 15 knots (17 mph / 28 km/h) winds. In winds exceeding 15 knots, the vessel's propellers will act as turbines, drawing power from the sails. On Caribbean Sea routes, this technology could reduce propulsion energy by 60%.

STX France's sail-ship design was developed for three vessel sizes, with the largest being a 15,000 GT-ton vessel with an LOA length of 190 meters (620 feet) and 150 passenger staterooms. The shipbuilding company began researching sail propulsion in 2009, and Silenseas holds technology patents (2009 and 2017) for the new sail. The unit is made of fiberglass, carbon, and epoxy-resin panels. A similar concept is Peace Boat's new vessel, Ecoship (built by Arctech Helsinki Shipyard in Helsinki, Finland).

STX France's new wind-power technology was tested on Ponant-owned superyacht Le Ponant, where one of the existing sails was replaced to test the new technology.

Shipboard Safety

In October 2017, MSC Cruises installed a modern "Man Overboard Detection System" on Meraviglia. The company also announced plans to install similar systems fleetwide.

This intelligent video capturing, image processing, and analysis system was tested and fine-tuned on the cruise ship for over 25,000 hours, achieving a confirmed accuracy level of 97%. The real-time video data, provided by the ship's HD CCTVs, is monitored and analyzed in a central security center by two independent image processing systems, significantly reducing false alerts.

When the alarm is triggered in the event of a man overboard, light and acoustic signals notify the ship's security officer, who can immediately review the recorded video and alert the Navigation Bridge crew to initiate a rescue operation.

MSC WORLD-Class Liners

On April 6, 2017, during the delivery ceremony of Meraviglia at STX France shipyard (Saint-Nazaire), MSC signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with STX France for a series of four new vessels (WORLD Class) at a total cost of EUR 4.5 billion. The order for the ships was confirmed on May 31, 2017.

MSC Cruises World-Class ship

The WORLD Class MSC vessels have a maximum capacity of 6,761 passengers and feature 2,632 staterooms (passenger capacity of 5,264 lower berths). The building cost per unit is EUR 1.125 billion, with the shipbuilder being STX France.

Each unit has a Gross Tonnage (GT) of 215,863 tons, a Length Overall (LOA) of 333 m (1,093 ft), a waterline beam/width of 41 m/135 ft (max width 54 m/177 ft), a height of 75 m (245 ft), and a draft of 9.2 m (31 ft).

Among the key features of these liners are the latest generation LNG-powered marine engines, new wastewater treatment plants, ultra-modern marine architecture with a Y-shaped superstructure (providing better panoramic views and a significantly increased number of balcony staterooms), a G-bow hull (vertically positioned at a 90-degree angle, improving stability and hydrodynamics/fuel efficiency), family-themed "villages," a panoramic aft pool, and a glass-covered pool deck.

MSC Cruises World-Class ship

The first ships in the WORLD series, MSC World Europa and MSC World America, were inaugurated in December 2022 and April 2025, respectively. Two additional vessels were ordered in November 2023 and are scheduled for delivery in May 2026 (MSC World Asia) and February 2027 (MSC World Atlantic). There is also an option for a fifth unit in this class.

In January 2016, MSC signed a partnership with Samsung to upgrade fleetwide technology. The provided equipment includes top-line flat HDTVs (for passenger cabins), LED screens and digital signage boards (in public areas), specialized medical equipment (for onboard hospitals), augmented reality mirrors, and printing solutions.

In April 2018, MSC introduced the new "Family Explorer Club" excursions program, expecting over 250,000 children on cruises in 2018. The program is designed to engage kids and their parents in custom-made shore excursions. The first ship offering this program was Divina. The interactive land tours are themed around the destination's history, and each tour features a local historical character symbolic of the city or region. Participants are given digital explorer maps and instructions for the mission, earning stickers for each task completed. On these family-only tours, children are booked at half-price. Excursions typically start later in the morning and last no more than four hours.

MSC Private Islands (Sir Bani Yas, Ocean Cay)

In December 2015, MSC revealed plans to develop an "unprecedented exclusive marine reserve island experience" in the Bahamas. The USD 200 million project began in Nassau, where the Prime Minister of The Bahamas and MSC's Executive Chairman signed a 100-year lease agreement, granting MSC Cruises the rights to develop and operate the island, now known as Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

MSC Cruises Ocean Cay Island port

Ocean Cay is a 95-acre (38-hectare / 0.38 km² / 0.15 mi²) island and the world's only private marine reserve. It features a 3,470 m (11,400 ft) beachfront with six beaches. Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is the largest private island development in the Caribbean by a cruise company. Interestingly, when MSC ships are berthed at Ocean Cay, all onboard facilities and services (including the casino) remain open and operational. The island is surrounded by 64 mi² (166 km²) of protected waters with coral reefs and approximately 90 species of fish.

In June 2016, MSC announced an exclusive "beach oasis" for MSC cruise passengers departing from the UAE (Abu Dhabi and Dubai) starting in winter 2016-2017. The 2.5 km (1.5 mi) stretch of land on Sir Bani Yas Island features shaded cabanas, hundreds of palm trees, and over 2,000 sunbeds across 36,000 m² (387,500 ft²) of sandy beaches. Other amenities include food and drink bars, MSC Aurea Spa (wellness complex), sports facilities (beach volleyball, tennis), a family-kids playground area (with a pergola/outdoor garden for parents), a Bedouin tent (selling local arts and crafts), a lounge space (with live music and a full-service bar), and exclusive beaches with VIP areas and cabanas.

Sir Bani Yas Island

The MSC island development is located on a smaller isle connected to the main island by a wooden boardwalk, providing exclusive access for MSC passengers. MSC worked closely with ecologists and the Abu Dhabi Port Authorities for over two years to develop the island while supporting ongoing conservation efforts. The island is one of the largest wildlife reserves in the region due to decades of ecological investment. The "Arabian Wildlife Park" on the main island is home to over 13,000 endangered and native animals, as well as millions of plants and trees.

The first cruise to Sir Bani Yas Island departed on December 3, 2016 (visiting on December 5th). Prices for a 7-night itinerary on MSC Fantasia started at USD 720 per person. In July 2016, Costa Cruises announced that Sir Bani Yas Island would be added as a stopover during the 2016-2017 season on Costa neoRiviera. In 2017-2018, neoRiviera was replaced in Dubai by Costa Mediterranea. Costa passengers have access to a private (Costa-exclusive) beach with VIP areas and cabanas.

Shore excursions available on the island include jeep safaris in the wildlife park, sea kayaking, and diving and snorkeling tours.

MSC Cruises Asia

In mid-January 2018, MSC announced a new partnership with China's largest online payment platform, "Alipay." The deal allows for mobile payments fleetwide on all MSC vessels operating in Asia, enabling customers to pay for onboard purchases. In November 2017, the Alipay option was introduced on MSC Lirica, and the next ship with Alipay technology was MSC Splendida, which homeported in Shanghai, China, beginning in May 2018.

Since May 2017, all Costa Asia-managed cruise vessels (from all Carnival Corporation brands) have offered Alipay payment services onboard. The partnership between Carnival Corporation and Ant Financial Services Group (a subsidiary of Alibaba, China's largest online trading company) enables Chinese cruise passengers on all Carnival Corp ships in Asia to pay for onboard services and products using their Alipay accounts. These services include shopping, excursions, food, and drinks, which are added to the passenger's cabin folio and cleared via the Alipay account nightly.

(NEW) MSC Kids Programming

In November 2019, MSC introduced a new kids' entertainment program on the Grandiosa (the fleet's flagship), featuring hundreds of hours of themed activities each week. Up to 700 m2 (7,535 ft2) of space is allocated for children and teens, with separate rooms for different age groups. The activities include virtual gaming (consoles and arcade machines), large aqua parks with slides, treasure hunts, trivia games, themed parties, and supervised playgrounds (both indoor and outdoor).

Starting with Grandiosa, MSC now offers three new activities for children (MSC Dance Crew, The Drone Academy, and Spy Mission), plus a new web series targeting teenagers.

  • "MSC Dance Crew" was developed in partnership with FremantleMedia, the company behind TV show franchises like "The X Factor," "Idols," and "Got Talent." This new music competition experience features teams of 12-17-year-old children competing to win the title of "Dance Crew of the Year."
  • "The Drone Academy" is offered in partnership with The Department, a London-based event agency. The high-tech drone racing activities take place in the ship's Sportsplex and occur at night, thanks to flickering effects and glowing drones. Teens (competing in teams) are trained in drone piloting beforehand. The race is held in a 390 m2 (4,200 ft2) arena and involves navigating 15 obstacles in the fastest time possible.
  • "Spy Mission" is MSC's first activity where kids play a central role. They are led through different scenes (throughout the ship) to unravel storylines, follow clues, and solve the mystery to win prizes.
  • "Cabin 12006" is MSC's new teen-targeted web series, following "Kelly and Kloe Onboard," which ran for three years (2016-2019) with over 5 million views online. Filming for "Cabin 12006" episodes is currently underway on the Bellissima (inaugurated in March 2019).

MSC Wedding Cruise Deals

Since 2015, MSC Cruises has offered a new cruise wedding program on Caribbean itineraries. The program provides onboard marriages (and ashore ceremonies) in several Caribbean port destinations, including Nassau (Bahamas), Bridgetown (Barbados), Grand Cayman Island, Falmouth (Jamaica), Cozumel (Mexico), San Juan (Puerto Rico), Philipsburg (St Maarten), Charlotte Amalie (St Thomas), and Miami (embarkation day only).

MSC has partnered with the wedding-planning company "The Wedding Experience" to offer wedding packages, with prices starting from USD 1,600 (onboard) and USD 2,200 (ashore). MSC's basic wedding package includes a pre-cruise event manager, a ceremony coordinator, one bottle of champagne, one cake for two, one bridal bouquet, and a one-hour photo session.

Event planners assist couples with all the details (weddings and vow renewals), offering wedding consultants and ceremony coordinators. Onboard and ashore receptions and ceremonies offer various options, including video/photo packages, fresh flowers, themed music, food and drink packages, specialty items (personalized stationery for invitations), and ground transportation for ashore events.

Couples booking groups of 13 or more cabins receive a complimentary balcony stateroom. Couples booking groups of 30 or more cabins receive a complimentary suite. A complimentary Yacht Club stateroom is offered for 50 or more booked cabins. Onboard ceremonies can accommodate up to 150 non-cruising guests.

MSC Cruises' first ship to offer onboard weddings was MSC Divina.

MSC Cruise Booking and Cancellation Policy Changes

In July 2017, MSC updated its cruise booking policy, now requiring final payments to be made 30 days earlier—90 days prior to departure, rather than 60 days.

  • Cancellations made 89-61 days before departure result in the loss of the non-refundable deposit.
  • Cancellations between 46-60 days before departure result in a charge of 50% of the original price.
  • Cancellations between 16-45 days before departure result in a charge of 75% of the original price.
  • Cancellations made 15 days or less before departure result in a charge of the full cruise price.

Since April 2, 2019, tips (gratuities) are included in MSC cruise fares for all UK and Ireland passengers.

MSC's ZOE

On February 1, 2019, MSC officially introduced ZOE, an in-cabin digital assistant. This technology, a "cruise industry first," was developed by Harman International, a US-based company fully owned by Samsung Electronics. Harman International has created digital audio solutions for major corporations, including Google, Microsoft, and Amazon.

  • ZOE is an artificial intelligence device with advanced voice recognition software, available in all passenger staterooms.
  • ZOE speaks seven languages, answers cruise-related questions, provides information on shipboard services, activities, and facilities, and makes reservations and bookings.
  • The device features far-field microphones, a top-quality speaker, a quad-core processor (for fast response times), and a direct phone connection (via Bluetooth). The system can also upgrade its database to answer previously unanswerable questions.
  • Passenger data, including itinerary and shipboard preferences, is stored in the Cloud and used for future voyages.
  • The device (about 15 cm in size) can be activated at any time by passengers. A waiver must be signed to consent to the storage of personal data.

Starting with Bellissima (2019), ZOE will be available on all new MSC ships, including Grandiosa (2019) and Virtuosa (2020), and will be introduced fleetwide by 2024.

"MSC for Me" - Fleetwide Digital Innovation Program 2017-2018

Each MSC cruise ship is equipped with thousands of connectivity points, digital access points, iBeacons (Bluetooth), and hundreds of interactive digital screens throughout the ship. All staterooms have RFID (radio-frequency identification) and NFC (near-field communication) access technologies.

The program was first introduced on MSC Meraviglia, launched in June 2017. This ship is equipped with 114 interactive screens, 244 info screens, 31 virtual screens, 81 video wall monitors, 3,050 iBeacons, 700 WAPs (wireless access points), and 1,200 CCTV cameras.

Key features of MSC's digitalization program include:

  • The app uses facial recognition technology and interactive/smart bracelets by Samsung.
  • Digital Concierge app - passengers can reserve or book onboard services, restaurants, and shore excursions in real-time, connecting them to MSC's experienced staff online.
  • Capture - a virtual reality tool to preview the cruise itinerary, create personal photo galleries, and share online.
  • Organizer - a cruise planning tool for mobile devices that provides detailed information and allows pre-booking (tours, theater seats, dinner tables, etc.) before embarkation and real-time planning while onboard.
  • Navigation - an interactive map (wayfinder) that provides advice (scheduled events, opening hours, etc.) and directions while on the ship. The app also allows real-time monitoring of kids (via bracelets).
  • TailorMade - a digital advisor for personal recommendations based on passenger preferences (interactive gaming, gambling, culinary, recreational activities, entertainment, etc.).
  • Passengers can opt out of all these connected ("Internet of Things" / IoT) services.
  • All staterooms are equipped with door locks that have built-in keypads (Samsung SHS-1321 NFC Ring).

MSC Fitness Cruise Packages

Since 2017, MSC Cruises has upgraded its fleetwide onboard wellness experience through a partnership with TechnoGym. This offering is part of the company's cruise fare-inclusive options available at booking.

  • The program starts with an online questionnaire to determine the customer's wellness goals, including exercise, healthy diet, and weight loss.
  • The wellness program is linked to MSC's fitness-themed cruises and includes one-time personal trainer consultations. Personal training sessions are available onboard at an extra cost.
  • The package also includes themed shore excursions (jogging, hiking, cycling), fitness classes (hula hooping, barre, yoga, Pilates), resistance bands, and workout mats for in-cabin use.
  • TechnoGym workout gear and laundry services for exercise clothing are provided onboard.
  • Healthy menu options are available in the ship's main dining rooms and Lido buffet restaurants.
  • Deals include a medical evaluation by the ship's doctor (blood pressure, EKG, lipid panel).
  • The "Wellness Experience" program offers five fitness cruise packages, starting at USD 930 per person (7-night itinerary, Interior Stateroom).

FREE Birthday Cruise

In 2017, MSC introduced a "free cruise deal" for customers celebrating their birthday. If your birthday falls during a select cruise, it is complimentary.

  • MSC's free cruise offers are available on itineraries in Europe (Mediterranean, Baltic), Asia (Arabian Peninsula/Dubai), and the Caribbean (West Indies, Cuba). Longer itineraries are available on World Voyages.
  • Booked passengers can extend their free birthday cruise and combine itineraries into B2B (back-to-back cruises) from 14 to 22 nights.
  • Bookings must include at least one paying passenger, and only one passenger can get the free birthday offer. The birthday must fall on one of the itinerary days (excluding arrival and departure days).
  • These offers are usually promotional, subject to availability, and valid only for lower cabin categories (usually excluding Suites).

MSC's "Dolphins Fan Cruise"

The MSC Seaside hosted the "Dolphins Fan Cruise" from March 17-24, 2018, a 7-day Caribbean and Antilles roundtrip from Miami to Nassau (Bahamas), St Thomas (USVI), and St Johns (Antigua). This special voyage was the result of a 3-year partnership between MSC and the NFL team, and it will be hosted annually over the next three years (2017-2020). Prices for the 2018 voyage started at USD 700 per person (balcony cabin rates based on double occupancy).

During these cruises, passengers had the opportunity to meet team alumni and participate in various activities:

  • Meet team legends Joe Rose, Kim Bokamper, Nat Moore, Patrick Surtain, Sam Madison, and Terry Kirby.
  • Get autographs and photos with the team's cheerleaders.
  • Cheer alongside the cheerleaders and hype up the crowd with the mascot TD (The Dolphin).
  • Enjoy performances by the cheer squad and mascot.
  • Participate in Q&A sessions with former players.

On April 28, 2018, the ship hosted the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders for the team's annual calendar photo shoot, along with special onboard programming.

  • Through MSC's "Save & Sail" summer promotion, potential customers had the chance to book a balcony stateroom on the "Cheerleaders voyage" starting at USD 650 per person. The off-promotion price started at USD 1,098 per person (Inside Cabin rates with double occupancy).
  • The cheerleaders cruise itinerary (April 28 - May 5) was a 7-day roundtrip from Miami to St Maarten, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas (Nassau).

MSC Virtual Reality Ship Tours

Samsung and MSC developed a cutting-edge virtual reality tool for touring MSC cruise liners. This technology was announced at Expo Milano 2015 (May 1 - October 31, 2015).

With this technology, MSC provided its top European sellers (travel agencies) with a powerful tool for introducing the brand to potential customers. The technology uses Samsung's "Gear VR" headsets (powered by Oculus) and a custom-built software app. This tool allows potential MSC passengers to "walk" through six key onboard areas (including staterooms, restaurants, pools, and theatres, even watching a show) without stepping aboard. The 360-degree sensory experience even includes aromas (like fresh-baked bread, fresh fruit, or chocolate) when observing an onboard restaurant.

The virtual cruise ship tour technology uses software and hardware by AxedGroup. The virtual tour app runs on Samsung Galaxy Note phones. Other experiences include tours of new MSC ships currently under construction.

Itinerary of MSC Cruises

This section provides a concise review of MSC's current and future cruise itinerary program. The company operates regularly scheduled voyages in Europe (Mediterranean, UK, Baltic), the Caribbean (departures from Florida, USA), South America, South Africa, Asia, the Arabian Gulf, and Alaska (starting in 2026).

MSC's Grand Voyages are seasonally offered relocation voyages, including Transatlantic crossings (Europe-USA-Caribbean, Europe-South America), Suez Canal (Mediterranean-Arabia/Dubai, UAE), Mediterranean-Baltic-UK, and Europe-South Africa. Cruises to Nowhere are also offered by MSC in South Africa.

Note: An extensive ship relocation schedule can be found at RepositionCruises.com.

With its new builds, MSC attracts a large number of retirees during the winter and targets families with children during the summer and school holidays. The company's smaller ships offer longer and more exotic itineraries but lack modern kids' facilities, as they are tailored to older travelers.

In 2025, MSC will begin homeporting in Galveston, Texas, USA (ship Seascape).

In addition to the Alaskan voyages, MSC Poesia offers two Panama Canal relocation itineraries (RepositionCruises.com) between Seattle and Miami, Florida, USA. The first "Grand Voyage Panama Canal" departs Miami on April 23, 2026.

Before MSC's first Alaskan deployment, MSC Poesia will complete a Transatlantic crossing from Europe to the USA (Civitavecchia-Rome to Miami) leaving Europe on April 6, 2026. Winter 2026-2027 itineraries

MSC Winter 2026-2027 season features an extensive deployment across the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and beyond. With 7 ships sailing from 4 U.S. homeports - Miami, Port Canaveral, New York, and Galveston - the cruise line is set to offer a diverse range of itineraries tailored to both short getaways and extended voyages.

A centerpiece of the season is MSC World America, which is due to embark on alternating 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings from Miami. Other key deployments include MSC Grandiosa and MSC Seashore, both offering voyages from Port Canaveral to the Caribbean and the Bahamas, while MSC Meraviglia sails from New York to Florida and the Bahamas. From Galveston, MSC Seascape operates a series of 7-night Western Caribbean cruises.

A highlight of the season is MSC Poesia's special 20-night Panama Canal voyage, departing from Seattle to Miami following the ship’s inaugural Alaska season. Additionally, MSC Cruises offers signature Transatlantic Grand Voyages, with MSC Grandiosa and MSC Meraviglia making extended repositioning crossings between Europe and North America.

Many itineraries include a call at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, the cruise line's private island in the Bahamas, offering pristine beaches and a range of activities for guests. In Miami, MSC World America alternates between Western Caribbean itineraries that call at Isla de Roatan, Costa Maya, Cozumel, and Ocean Cay, and Eastern Caribbean routes featuring Puerto Plata and San Juan. Also sailing from Miami, MSC Seaside operates shorter 3- and 4-night cruises to Ocean Cay and Nassau.

From Galveston, MSC Seascape focuses on 7-night Western Caribbean sailings, calling at Costa Maya, Roatan, and Cozumel. In New York, MSC Meraviglia is scheduled to sail weeklong Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries with stops in Port Canaveral, Nassau, and Ocean Cay. The ship is also undertaking a 19-night Grand Voyage from Barcelona to New York in October 2026, visiting Alicante, Gibraltar, Lisbon, and Boston along the way.

Port Canaveral hosts MSC Seashore for short 3- and 4-night cruises to the Bahamas, while MSC Grandiosa operates alternating 7-night Western and Eastern Caribbean itineraries. MSC Cuba cruises from Havana

In January 2016, MSC became the first major cruise line to homeport in Havana, with MSC Opera (sailing to Jamaica, Mexico, and the Cayman Islands), while MSC Armonia operated on 8-day/7-night itineraries, visiting ports in Central America and the Caribbean:

  • 8-day roundtrip from Havana visited Roatan (Honduras), Belize City (Belize), Costa Maya (Mexico), Isla de la Juventud (Cuba)
  • 8-day roundtrip from Havana visited Montego Bay (Jamaica), George Town (Grand Cayman), and Cozumel (Mexico)
  • Both itineraries were combinable into a 14-night roundtrip Havana back-to-back cruise

Cuban itineraries on MSC Opera were roundtrips from Havana.

Note: According to current Cuban law, US citizens of Cuban origin (born in Cuba) are not allowed to visit the island country (including on cruise ships). Regardless of their US citizenship status, Cuba-born Americans were denied booking on cruise itineraries visiting ports in Cuba. However, the situation changed in April 2016 after Carnival Corporation negotiated with the Cuban government to allow ships with Cuban-born passengers, as such US citizens are allowed to visit the country on USA-Cuba charter flights. The Carnival-fathom line started Miami to Cuba cruises in May 2016.

Alaska Airlines offers regular nonstop flights to Havana from Los Angeles (California, USA). An 80-minute JetBlue flight from Fort Lauderdale (Florida) to Havana costs less than USD 100. Previously, air travel from the USA to Cuba was thought to be restricted to charter flights only.

IMPORTANT: On June 4, 2019, the US Government announced new regulations (economic sanctions) that ended group travel to Cuba, including via US-homeported cruise liners, effective immediately. The ban relates to "private and corporate aircraft, cruise ships, sailboats, fishing boats, and other similar aircraft and vessels". The US travel restrictions impacted hundreds of pre-scheduled cruise itineraries, which were adjusted to no longer stop in Cuban seaports.

(NEW) PortMiami MSC Terminal AAA

In July 2018, Miami-Dade County and MSC signed an agreement for extended preferential berthing rights and a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the building of a new Cruise Terminal AAA at Port Miami.

Port Miami is MSC's exclusive homeport in the USA. The new agreement extended the existing Saturday preferential MSC berthing rights to Sundays. Additionally, the new cruise terminal (completed in October 2022) was projected to accommodate MSC's largest World Class ships (carrying up to 7,000 passengers).
