Marella Discovery (1996-built as "Splendour of the Seas", last refurbished in 2022) is of the Vision-class Royal Caribbean ships – together with Enchantment, Grandeur, Legend (Marella Discovery 2), Rhapsody, Vision. The vessel was built for the Royal Caribbean International (RCI) line. The ship (initially named “Thomson Discovery”) is chartered by Marella via the parent company TUI Cruises. Starting operations for Marella Cruises in June 2016, the new ship became fleet’s largest, followed by the sister-ship Legend (Marella Discovery since April 2017). Marella's fleet will be additionally enlarged by the old TUI Cruises ships Mein Schiff 1 (Marella Explorer since 2018) and Mein Schiff 2 (Marella Explorer 2 since 2019).
Marella Discovery cruise ship deck plan has a total of 918 staterooms for 1830 passengers (max capacity is 2074 guests), served by 760 crew/staff. The boat has 11 decks (10 passenger-accessible, 5 with cabins), 8 restaurants, 8 lounges and bars, 2 swimming pools, 4 Jacuzzis (outdoor whirlpool hot tubs), 9 elevators. Of all onboard dining venues, 4 serve breakfast, 7 serve lunch, 7 serve dinner and 2 are at a fee (additional surcharge pp) with a variety of themed cuisine specialties.
Marella’s ship Discovery is the fleet’s largest, with the common for RCI (but unique and “first time ever” for a Marella liner) features, like the Rock Climbing Wall and the Outdoor Movie Theater (huge LED screen and ample deck seating).
Note: CruiseMapper's Marella Discovery deckplan page also shows the decks of the Royal Caribbean's Splendour of the Seas.
Marella Discovery refurbishments 2021-2022 review
For drydock 2022 (November, at Navantia Shipyard in Cadiz Spain) was contracted MJM Marine Ltd (part of MJM Group/Northern Ireland) for extensive outfitting of all passenger staterooms. The refurbishment also included new cabin bathrooms and UV-free Antimicrobial Light technology (by Vyv Tech, NY USA) installed in all wet units by a team from LightPartner Lichtsysteme GmbH (Bremen, Germany).
Following drydock 2021 refurbishment, the ship now has "The Glass House" - a redesigned (beach club-style) pool deck (aft on Deck 9) with an indoor swimming pool and an a-la-carte-priced restaurant.
By project 2021, the entire Sun Deck was revamped and redesigned by adding new cabana-style day beds, premium garden furniture (sun loungers, 4-seat dining tables, sofas, deckchairs). The swimming pool's tiles were changed, as well as the wall coverings, all the outdoor deck flooring, new lighting was installed (with different mood lights in the evenings).
The Glass House also offers a-la-carte dining with two menus - deli-style food (during the day) and tapas-style menu when in the evenings transforms into a casual restaurant.
