Viking Rurik (built 1985 as “Mariya Ulyanova”, acquired 1990 and operated as “Viking Peterhof” until 2011, last refurbished 2012 /renamed) is one of the Viking Cruises Russia ships – together with Viking Sineus (of the same vessel class- “Vladimir Ilyich”). The other sister-sips are Viking Akun, Viking Helgi, Viking Ingvar and Viking Truvor. The Viking cruise ship Rurik is named after the Varangian prince who established the Rurikid Dynasty. Rurik consolidated the lands of his brothers Truvor and Sineus into the mighty Kievan Rus empire. Rurikids ruled Russia for over 700 years. The last of this lineage was Ivan IV “The Terrible” (1530-1584 AD).
