Virgin Voyages - Richard Branson’s new cruise brand, celebrated the grand opening of Terminal V at PortMiami (Florida USA) on Sunday, February 13, ringing in the special occasion with a mermaid-studded soiree.
Branson, joined by Tom McAlpin (Virgin Voyages’ CEO) and Daniella Levine Cava (Miami-Dade County Mayor) took part in a memorable ribbon-cutting ceremony marked by a grand entrance via electric Moke vehicles and mermaid aerialists.
With a street address of 718N Cruise Blvd. (earmarked to celebrate Richard Branson’s birthday on July 18), the grand opening of Virgin's own cruise terminal represents a milestone in the history of the brand and the first time Scarlet Lady sailed from her new homeport.
Terminal V, an impressive 3-story building on the northwestern corner of PortMiami, brings more magic to the city with an unobstructed skyline view of Biscayne Bay, downtown, and Edgewater. On Sunday, a little more than 1 year following the groundbreaking ceremony, Virgin invited local city officials and brand partners to celebrate the opening of the 132,000 ft2 structure.
The geometric design, a palm grove where land meets the sea, was inspired by the area’s historical origins (used formerly for harvesting coconuts) and Miami’s iconic palm trees. The concept was created by the global architecture and landscape firm Arquitectonica and constructed from the ground up by Suffolk Construction. The rooftop of Terminal V resembles the edges of a palm canopy with cutouts that allow light to stream through. Enveloped by 1,000+ palm trees, Terminal V features natural skylights, floor-to-ceiling windows, and lush indoor landscaping. Further inspired by the line’s design ethos of the “Modern Romance of Sailing,” the interiors of Terminal V give a nod to mid-century design. The space incorporates local artwork by Art in Public Places, changing LED screens, and an alfresco terrace for Sailors. Outside, a “Sail the Virgin Way” sign and red lighting mirror the city lights.
Scarlet Lady, Virgin Voyages’ first cruise ship will call Terminal V at PortMiami her home year-round. Valiant Lady will join in the winter of 2022. Both cruise ships will sail on a mix of multi-night itineraries to the Caribbean, each with a call at Virgin’s Bimini Beach Club.
