Due to a fog advisory and high winds forecasted for June 29th, Viking Cruises canceled its scheduled visit to Houghton (Michigan USA) Wednesday morning.
According to the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce, the fog and high winds were expected to cause safety concerns for tendering passengers from the cruise ship which would have been anchored outside Dollar Bay (Portage Lake).
Brad Barnett, executive director of the Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau said it was a bit disappointing, but safety was the top priority.
“I know the community was excited to see the Octantis in the Keweenaw Waterway, but we’ll have to wait a few more weeks until their next planned visit.”
A ship call scheduled earlier in June was also canceled due to high winds.
Viking Octantis is due to make 5 more stops in Houghton throughout the rest of the summer/early fall. The best location to view the 203-m/666-ft long (380-passenger) vessel will be in Dollar Bay at Nara Nature Park boardwalk off US-41.
Viking's ship Octantis is planning to anchor in Portage Lake, tendering to guests for ~5 km/3 mi to Bridgeview Park in Houghton.
