A 24-year-old MSC Cruises crew went overboard from the MSC Splendida ship on Wednesday, September 14, while the vessel was off the coast of Reggio Calabria, Italy.
The liner stopped immediately and the Man Overboard signal was sounded at ~4 am (2:00 UTC).
The ship's crew members lowered a lifeboat while the man in the water could be heard calling for help.
After about an hour, the search & rescue operation was successfully completed.
Italian news outlets reported that the 24-year-old crew s a Brazilian national working aboard MSC Splendida as a dancer. He had gone overboard intentionally after an argument with his girlfriend.
Investigation of the accident was conducted at the next call port (Taranto Italy), where authorities reviewed the CCTV footage and questioned witnesses.
After recovery, the crew will be reportedly sent back to his country.
At the time of the accident, MSC Splendida was sailing on a 7-day Mediterranean voyage round-trip from Civitavecchia-Rome, Italy. Ports of call included Genoa, Milan, Italy (Sept 10), Marseille, France Riviera (Sept 11), Siracusa, Sicily Italy, Syracuse (Sept 13), and Taranto, Italy (Sept 14).
