Acclaimed NASA scientist Dr. Kathryn Dwyer Sullivan/Kathy Sullivan has been named Godmother to Scenic Cruises’ new "Discovery Yacht" Scenic Eclipse 2.
She has traveled into space 3 times as one of NASA’s first female astronauts. She is also the first American woman to complete a spacewalk, as well as the first person to both orbit the Earth/dive into the Challenger Deep (the deepest point in the world’s oceans), earning her the title “World’s Most Vertical Person”.
Recognized as a pioneer in her field, the American geologist/oceanographer is the perfect choice to take on the role of Godmother. She will officially name Scenic Eclipse 2 at a ceremony in Malaga (Spain) on June 3rd, 2023.
Chief Sales & Marketing Officer Scenic Group, Anna Wolfsteiner said they were immensely proud to have Dr. Sullivan as Godmother to Scenic Eclipse II.
“She truly is the living embodiment of what our yachts stand for – pushing boundaries, making discoveries and reveling in a sense of adventure. Throughout her career, Dr. Sullivan has grasped life’s opportunities and committed herself to advancing our knowledge of the world around us. We believe the guests who travel aboard our Discovery Yachts share that same passion and curiosity to explore and learn.”
Scenic Eclipse 2 joins the Discovery Yacht fleet in mid-April next year, with the christening ceremony taking place in June after a series of voyages exploring the charming ports/villages of the Mediterranean, a lot of which are inaccessible to bigger cruise ships.
Dr. Kathy Sullivan is recognized as one of the foremost scientists in the world and boasts an incredible career in research and exploration. Highlights feature flying on 3 Space Shuttle missions, including the mission that made her the first American woman to walk in space as well as the mission that launched the Hubble space telescope; serving as Chief Scientist/Administrator of NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration); and being the first woman to dive into the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, the deepest in the Earth’s oceans. Her exploration has earned her 3 Guinness World Records.
Scenic Eclipse 2 is currently under construction in Croatia (Rijeka). The same-designed sistership Scenic Eclipse 1 was inaugurated in 2019. The vessel (IMO number 9850460) will be Bahamas-flagged (MMSI tba) and registered in Nassau.
This is a top-luxury superyacht with a max passenger capacity of 228 (plus 192 staff-crew) and a 10-deck design, more resembling a billionaire yacht than a passenger ship. The ultra-modern design features an ice-strengthened hull, top-deck helipad (with two on-deck stored helicopters / in hangars), 12x Zodiacs (high-speed, large-capacity RIBs / rigid inflatable boats), 1x submersible (9-person mini-submarine/model "Triton 660-9 AVA"), 1x ROV (camera-equipped Remotely Operated Vehicle). The aft-located Marina Platform is used for launching water sports equipment (aqua quad-bikes, sea kayaks, snorkeling, and scuba diving activities).
