The Balearic government reached an agreement with major cruise ship operators and only 3 vessels will be allowed to visit Port Palma at any one time in 2023.
The rules go even further stating that only one of these 3 can be large-sized liner with a capacity to accommodate thousands of passengers.
The government promised to resolve the issue of overcrowding by cruise passengers in Palma when it came to power and it has been successful. But the new ruling will not please retailers in the city who rely on the lucrative market. Palma is split over cruise ships. with the businesses underlining its importance while some residents say that the port city is overcrowded.
Environmentalists have warned about the impact of the cruise industry on Palma.
It is still unclear whether the new ruling will mean that fewer vessels will now visit Palma Port.
