The world' first cruise ship with a 5G connectivity is China-built and will be delivered in 2023-Q4. The announcement was made by Adora Cruises (subsidiary and travel brand of the joint venture company CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping Ltd) on Thursday, January 12th.
ADORA partnered with China Telecom in order to bring 5G connectivity to its first large vessel.
The liner will boast advanced wireless communication technology, along with a Wi-Fi6 and mobile 5G network, both available to provide passengers onboard with the same network experience as on land.
CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping, is a joint venture between China's largest shipbuilding company CSSC-China State Shipbuilding Corporation and the USA-based Carnival Corporation. Its managing director Chen Ranfeng said that by seizing a first-mover advantage in the industry's 5G market, they hoped "to set a new standard for digital communication in the marine travel sector."
Construction of Adora's first ship was completed and it is due to start operation in 2023. With a gross tonnage of 135,500, the vessel has 2125 guest rooms and can accommodate up to 5246 passengers.
Gong Bo of China Telecom's Shanghai branch said they would focus "on network communication, digital high-definition, as well as AR/VR and other content services, in order to further improve the guest experience and jointly promote the high-quality development of the tourism economy."
