Media outlets in Finland reported that a small fire had broken out on the next-largest cruise ship in the world, currently under construction at Meyer Turku shipyard.
On February 2nd, at ~10 am, a fire alarm was sounded on RCI-Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas ship at the yard.
The cause of the alarm was that a fire had broken out at one of the staircases of the upper deck aboard the liner. As a precaution, all ~2500 workers were evacuated.
The fire was quickly extinguished by the shipbuilder's own fire brigade. Works on the vessel, with the exception of the fire area, continued an hour after the fire alarm was activated.
The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
The damage is estimated to be minor, the shipyard announced.
According to Meyer Turku's spokesperson, the evacuation of Icon OTS had caused a slight delay in the work.
However, the employees were already back to work there.
