Major ferry operator P&O Ferries is contemplating reducing its UK workforce by 60 jobs, primarily in managerial and supervisory positions.
The company has also proposed restructuring an additional 60 jobs into similar or new roles. This move comes just over a year after P&O unexpectedly dismissed almost 800 seafarers, which attracted widespread criticism.
According to a spokesperson from P&O Ferries, they are currently consulting with trade unions about the proposed changes. The company states that the goal is to make the operator more competitive and sustainable. The proposed changes will not impact operational colleagues below the leadership level or any of the ships' staff/crew.
The GMB union, a representative of P&O Ferries staff, expressed their extreme disappointment and feels the company is once again letting down its employees. They believe that the company's new ferries should have been a turning point but instead have become a "nightmare" for workers, especially considering their dedication over the challenging weekend.
