Italian authorities have discovered the deceased body of a teenager who fell overboard from a Costa Cruises ship, the Costa Toscana, after departing from Civitavecchia (Rome, Italy) and heading towards Genoa (Milan).
The accident occurred on April 13th, with the cruise ship being ~7 miles (11 km) away from Civitavecchia.
The teenager was identified as a German national, and although reports suggest that he might have intentionally taken his own life due to depression, there are still uncertainties surrounding the circumstances of his death.
Despite the difficulty in carrying out rescue operations at sea, the Italian Coast Guard and firefighters were promptly called to the scene, and an investigation has been launched.
The 2021-inaugurated Costa Toscana is now continuing the 7-day voyage (roundtrip from Civitavecchia) ending on April 20th.
Costa Crociere has expressed deep sadness over the event while respecting the privacy of the individual and their family.
