After a construction period of 3 years, the renovated Nassau Cruise Port has opened to accommodate cruise tourists heading to the Bahamas' capital city.
The revamped port now includes a 6th dock and a new terminal building, along with several exciting additions. These include a Junkanoo museum that showcases the destination's national cultural festival, event and entertainment spaces, a 3500-seat amphitheater, a living coral exhibit, shops (selling locally-made merchandise), and updated food and beverage facilities.
According to Chester Cooper (Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments & Aviation), the renovated cruise facility offers a completely fresh experience for visitors. It not only reflects Bahamian culture in every aspect but also represents a significant milestone in ushering in a new era for tourism in downtown Nassau. Additionally, it serves as a beautiful welcome for the millions of cruisers who disembark here annually.
With guidance from Junkanoo experts Arlene Nash Ferguson and Percy "Vola" Francis, the Nassau Cruise Port Junkanoo Museum provides an immersive experience that tells the story of the destination's cultural festival. The port features 40 retail spaces where authentic Bahamian products are showcased, including local businesses such as Bahama Hand Prints and Bamboo Shack.
Mike Maura, the Port Director for Nassau, anticipates that the port's traffic numbers for 2023 will surpass the levels seen before the COVID crisis, with ~4.2 million visitors. The growth trajectory is promising, as the Port had its busiest year on record in 2019 with 3.85 million visitors. Already, 4.5 million confirmations have been received for 2024.
Earlier this year, the Nassau Cruise Port achieved a record-breaking milestone by welcoming 28554 cruisers in a single day. This highlights the crucial role of the cruise industry in The Bahamas' economy. The improved port not only provides entrepreneurial opportunities for Bahamians but also benefits local businesses, shops, and restaurants.
To celebrate the grand opening, the Nassau Cruise Port hosted various private events and organized a "Cruise Passenger Day Party" on May 27th, 2023. Passengers were invited to explore the new facilities and enjoy Junkanoo rush outs as part of the festivities.
