HAL-Holland America Line has enhanced its 2024 Solar Eclipse cruise program by adding astronomy experts to provide a unique experience for guests. Those sailing on ms Koningsdam and ms Zaandam during the spring of 2024 to witness the total eclipse will receive exclusive access to lectures, demonstrations, and valuable advice on optimizing their eclipse viewing.

Professor Adam Burgasser from San Diego's University of California, who specializes in astronomy and astrophysics, will accompany guests on ms Koningsdam as she navigates the coast of Mexico within the narrow "path of totality" for the total solar eclipse on April 8th, 2024. Professor Burgasser, the principal investigator at the university's "Cool Star Lab," will deliver special lectures on the ship's World Stage prior to the eclipse, educating guests and assisting them in creating their own eclipse viewers. During the eclipse, he will guide guests in safely observing and comprehending this extraordinary event from unique vantage points on the ship.

The 22-day Solar Eclipse Cruise on ms Koningsdam will commence on March 23rd, starting from San Diego, CA and following the coast of Mexico to provide an optimal viewing location before crossing the Pacific Ocean towards Hawaii. Departing on April 5th, the itinerary includes a stop at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with the day of April 8th being spent at sea to observe the eclipse. Afterward, the ship will visit Puerto Vallarta before heading to Hawaii.

On ms Zaandam, guest presenter Jim McParland will share his expertise through lectures and demonstrations during the solar eclipse experience. The ship will also be positioned for optimal viewing of the eclipse as she passes over Mexico. Zaandam's 14-day Solar Eclipse Cruise departs on March 30th (roundtrip from San Diego) and stops in Mazatlan on the eclipse day.
