Cunard Line celebrated a remarkable milestone with its 10 millionth cruise passenger in Victoria, BC.
Victoria, BC's Greater Victoria Harbour Authority (GVHA) extended a warm welcome to the ten millionth cruise passenger brought by Cunard on August 16th, 2023. This significant event took place at The Breakwater District, Ogden Point.
The milestone was marked as Cunard's Queen Elizabeth arrived, commemorating 54 years of cruise ships gracing Port Victoria.
Since the inaugural cruise ship's arrival in 1969, the cruise industry has experienced substantial growth. Robert Lewis-Manning, CEO of GVHA, highlighted that 10 million cruise visitors to Victoria stand as a remarkable achievement, adding that cruise tourism plays a pivotal role in boosting the local visitor economy and contributing to job creation, with $40+ million in annual salaries.
Annually, the combined spending of cruise visitors and crew, amounting to $56 million, significantly benefits the local economy, spanning tours, local transport, retail, and dining. Furthermore, cruise lines invest $84 million in various aspects including warehousing, ship agents, maintenance, port fees, and docking services.
Mayor Marianne Alto emphasized the cruise industry's significance for Victoria, stating that it generates numerous job opportunities and supports local livelihoods.
During the event, two couples disembarked from Cunard's Queen Elizabeth and were presented with gifts, a gesture courtesy of the Bay Centre. Industry representatives and stakeholders gathered at the port to mark the occasion.
Matt Gleaves, VP, Commercial, Cunard North America, highlighted Victoria's appeal, noting its natural beauty, architectural heritage, diverse dining options, and welcoming community. He underlined Victoria's significance as a cherished destination within Cunard's voyages and among its sister brands.
