NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line announced its resumption of calls to Kahului Maui, following collaboration with the Maui community, Hawaii State Governor Josh Green, and the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
NCL's Pride of America, known for its 18-year history of year-round Hawaiian Island cruises, is set to resume her weekly overnight stops in Kahului on September 3rd, 2023. This decision comes after NCL temporarily halted its Maui calls due to the recent devastating wildfires in Lahaina on the island's west side.
David J. Herrera (NCL's President) emphasized their deep connection with Hawaii and their swift response to the wildfires. NCL adjusted itineraries to avoid stressing the impacted region, contributed $50,000 to Maui United Way, and collected over $150,000 in supplies for donation. He expressed their eagerness to return to Maui with the support of the local community, Governor Green, and the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
Governor Josh Green expressed gratitude for the partnership with NCL and their recent support for Lahaina's recovery. While West Maui travel is limited to residents and responders, he encouraged cruise lines like NCL to gradually resume visits to other parts of the island and the state.
Kalani Ka'ana'ana (Chief Brand Officer of the Hawaii Tourism Authority) noted the distressing impact of the wildfires on Lahaina and highlighted the need for responsible tourism. He urged travelers and industry entities like NCL to return mindfully, exploring areas unaffected by the fires and contributing to the island's recovery efforts.
