Fincantieri has recently completed the simultaneous drydock refits and modernization of two ships operated by Crystal Cruises (acquired in 2023 by A&K Travel Group) - Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity.
The contract, which was finalized in December 2022, underwent an initial engineering development phase, followed by approximately five months of extensive renovation work aimed at significantly enhancing the onboard amenities and accommodations. This comprehensive overhaul encompassed the hotel components of both ships, including public areas, suites, and guest rooms, leading to substantial improvements in their operational longevity. The project concluded with the customary drydocking activities necessary for their return to service.
Each ship saw the radical transformation of three decks, with the installation of over 100 new suites and guest rooms, many of which are two, three, or even four times the size of the previous 230 units. This expansion created more spacious and luxurious environments, thanks to the use of refined finishes. An additional 100 suites and guest rooms were modernized without altering their dimensions, and casinos were removed to make way for expansive lounges.
Environmental sustainability considerations played a significant role in the modernization efforts, with a focus on wastewater treatment and energy recovery systems. Furthermore, the hulls of the vessels received a special state-of-the-art eco-silicone paint treatment designed to reduce friction and fuel consumption.
With nearly 240 m / 787 ft in length, volume ~51000 GT-tons, and max passenger capacities of ~740 and 606 (for Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony, respectively), these vessels have been significantly upgraded to meet the evolving needs of their discerning travelers.
