Australian solo rower Tom Robinson was succesfully rescueed on Friday, October 6th, by the P&O Australia's ship Pacific Explorer. The vessel was in the midst of a 9-day journey departing from Auckland (New Zealand), carrying ~2000 passengers, when it responded to a request for assistance from the New Caledonia Marine Rescue Coordination Centre.
Tom Robinson had embarked on a daring solo expedition to become the youngest person to row across the Pacific Ocean. Unfortunately, he encountered difficulties in the waters south of Vanuatu, prompting him to activate his SOS/distress beacon due to damage sustained by his vessel.
The Pacific Explorer's crew conducted a rescue operation to retrieve the man from his capsized craft early in the morning. After safely bringing him aboard the cruise ship, Robinson received medical attention and was provided with fresh clothing and a nourishing meal.
Although Robinson had endured sunburn and dehydration during his ordeal, he was reported to be in overall good health following the rescue.
In a statement, Robinson said:
“I’d just like to say a huge thank you to all the crew on P&O Pacific Explorer whose seamanship and professionalism ensured a safe rescue.
“Once aboard I was treated with the utmost courtesy and kindness by the medical staff. Many, many thanks to P&O for everything they have done for me.”
The rescue operation was coordinated by Marine Rescue Coordination Centre, New Caledonia. A French navy aircraft also provided assistance.
