During a recent sailing of Virgin Voyages, over 70 individuals reported being unwell.
The USA's CDC agency (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) reported that among the 2198 passengers on MS Scarlet Lady, 66 passengers and 7 crew experienced Norovirus symptoms such as abdominal cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Officially, the CDC attributed the illness to an unknown causative agent.
The ship was on a 5-day Riviera Maya Cruise - a roundtrip from PortMiami Florida USA (itinerary October 8-13).
Michelle Bentubo (Virgin Voyages' COO) reported that the affected passengers were isolated, and the company implemented enhanced sanitation measures, including additional cleaning of cabins and high-contact areas.
Virgin Voyages said it was collaborating with the CDC, with no impact on the upcoming voyage's departure time or ports of call.
