PortMiami welcomed the arrival of MSC Explora 1, marking the ship's maiden call in South Florida and its introduction to the Caribbean cruise market. Explora 1 is the first vessel in a fleet of 6 luxury ships within MSC Group's new expedition travel brand Explora Journeys.
Michael Ungerer, CEO of Explora Journeys, expressed pride in introducing the impressive new ship to the vibrant Miami market. Miami is a pivotal destination and a key gateway to the Caribbean for ocean travel, making it an ideal location to showcase the innovative product offered by Explora I.
On November 3, 2023, a maritime tradition was observed with a crest exchange ceremony to celebrate the ship's first visit to PortMiami. The event was attended by key figures including Captain Diego Michelozzi, Michael Ungerer, CEO of Explora Journeys, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, and Hydi Webb, PortMiami's Director and CEO.
Following its maiden call, Explora I embarked on a journey from Miami to San Juan Puerto Rico. Over the following months, the luxury ship will explore the Caribbean and Central America, making stops at various ports before heading to the West Coast USA.
Explora 1 boasts cutting-edge environmental and marine technologies, including selective catalytic reduction technology, shore power connectivity, underwater noise management systems, and a range of onboard energy-efficient equipment to reduce emissions.
This inaugural ship set sail in July 2023, and the fleet will continue to grow with Explora 2 joining in summer 2024, and Explora 3 and Explora 4 in 2026 and 2027, respectively, all equipped with LNG-iquefied natural gas technology. The introduction of Explora 5 and Explora 6, powered by hydrogen, is planned for 2027 and 2028, further demonstrating the brand's commitment to innovative and sustainable ocean travel.
