The cruise ship MSC Preziosa undertook a rescue operation near Jorge Grego Island/Ilha Grande (Angra dos Reis, Brazil), saving 6 fishermen from a sinking vessel.
Unfortunately, one fisherman lost his life during the rescue process on the sinking boat.
The incident transpired when a fishing boat manned by 7 crew sank near Ilha Grande. MSC Preziosa's crew promptly responded to the SOS/distress call.
Following the rescue, survivors were transported to the village Vila do Abraao, where coordinated efforts, including a Civil Defense ambulance and a Fire Department boat, facilitated their transfer to the mainland for medical attention.
Upon reaching the Santa Luzia Pier/Angra dos Reis, the survivors received additional medical support, with two ambulances from Samu (Mobile Emergency Care Service) and CBMERJ (Military Firefighters Corps) ready to transport them to a hospital unit. Regrettably, one survivor was in a more weakened state. Furthermore, the body of the deceased was discovered by firefighters inside the submerged vessel and has been transferred to Angra dos Reis City's IML (Instituto Medico Legal), awaiting identification.
The Brazilian Navy has initiated an investigation into the causes of the tragic accident.
MSC Cruises' ship is on a 3-day voyage roundtrip from Santos/Sao Paulo.
