Global Ports Holding (GPH), the world's leading cruise port operator, proudly announces a noteworthy advancement in environmental sustainability through the successful implementation of shore power at Valletta Cruise Port, a subsidiary under its umbrella.
On December 1, 2023, Viking Saturn achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first cruise vessel ever to be entirely powered through the Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system at Valletta Cruise Port's state-of-the-art facilities. The following day, Viking Venus joined Viking Saturn at Boiler Wharf in the historic port, experiencing simultaneous shore power supply. Both Viking ships were effectively powered through the OPS, marking a significant moment as the inaugural instance of shore-to-ship connectivity within the extensive GPH port network.
This EUR 49.9 million initiative, led by the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects, Infrastructure Malta, and Transport Malta, and backed by Valletta Cruise Port, introduces shore power at the five main cruise ship quays of Valletta's Grand Harbour. The initiative yields substantial air quality improvements, contributing to a significant reduction in emissions.
Shore power provides cruise ships with essential energy, allowing the shutdown of onboard generators to meet stringent environmental regulations. The shore connection offers a rapid, straightforward, and adaptable link to the ship, aligning with the maritime industry's sustainability initiatives.
During a recent visit to Valletta Cruise Port, Prime Minister Robert Abela expressed robust support for the initiative, deeming it a pivotal endeavor. He emphasized the government's commitment to fostering sustainable practices in the maritime industry, acknowledging the environmental challenges and highlighting the project's dual role in addressing these challenges and presenting a noteworthy economic opportunity.
