The trend of "boutique cruising" remains prominent in the global maritime industry, as an increasing number of operators integrate small ships into their fleets or transition entirely to this distinctive experience. Among the new entrants is Exploris Expeditions & Cruises (2022-launched brand) benefiting from the expertise of Philippe Videau, one of Ponant's founders. Targeting the French-speaking market, Exploris One is the company's inaugural cruise ship, commencing her maiden voyage in December 2023.
Focused solely on small-ship voyages, Exploris One, formerly known as the Silver Explorer, was a strategic choice. Originally built in the late 1980s, it holds the distinction of being Silversea Cruises' first ice-class vessel and, simultaneously, the fleet's oldest. Acquired by the new French cruise company in 2022, the vessel underwent drydock refurbishment in a Chilean shipyard, receiving a fresh color scheme and additional systems, including a new satellite antenna.
Rebranded as Exploris One, the ship emerged as a 140-passenger vessel with 60 cabins and 12 suites, featuring premium amenities such as a spa, fitness area, multiple jacuzzis, and expansive outdoor spaces. With an ice-reinforced hull, the French cruise ship is equipped for secure and comfortable polar region travel, boasting 12 Zodiacs for frequent disembarkation during polar expeditions.
Measuring 108 meters in length, Exploris One stands out for its generous accommodation capacity within its size range. Operated by a crew exceeding 100 individuals, it cruises at an average speed of 12.5 knots (23.5 kph). Currently, Exploris Expeditions & Cruises is in the process of developing two new ships, promising an intimate, luxurious onboard experience coupled with the highest eco-friendly standards.
