Color Line's two Ro-Pax vessels (car and passenger ferries) serving the Denmark-Norway routes have exclusively utilized B100 biofuel provided by marine fuel supplier Bunker One.
The renewable biofuel, supplied to Color Line's ships SuperSpeed 1 and SuperSpeed 2 traveling between Hirtshals Denmark and Larvik and Kristiansand (Norway), has resulted in a remarkable 85% average reduction in CO2 emissions. Color Line's shift to biofuels stems from their myriad advantages, including emission reduction, enhanced energy efficiency, and the absence of engine modifications.
With the EU ETS in effect since January 1 and the impending FuelEU Maritime regulations, Bunker One has proactively prepared for the anticipated surge in demand for lower carbon fuels like biofuel. The collaboration between Color Line and Bunker One exemplifies tailored solutions to meet individual client needs. A detailed delivery and operations plan was crafted, emphasizing coordination for quick transitions during the ferries' short port stays.
The B100 biofuel, sourced from Danish DAKA ecoMotion, adheres to FAME-grade/RED II-compliant standards and is produced locally in Denmark from organic waste. According to DAKA ecoMotion, this biofuel switch can reduce GHG emissions by ~85% compared to the default value of transport diesel. As the demand for lower carbon fuels continues to rise, driven by regulatory developments such as IMO CII, Fuel EU Maritime, and the inclusion of shipping in the EU ETS, Bunker One positions itself not just as a physical supplier but also as an advisor on regulatory compliance.
