Whangarei witnessed the arrival of its inaugural cruise ship, Oceania Regatta, on Sunday morning (February 4), as hundreds of international travelers aboard the vessel were greeted with a spectacular celebration at Northport in Marsden Point.

Operated by Oceania Cruises, the ship, carrying 580 passengers, docked at the port ~8 AM. Kaimanaaki Aperahama Edwards conducted a traditional powhiri to welcome the captain and crew as they disembarked.

Upon disembarkation, the passengers were treated to a kapa haka performance and waiata by students from Bream Bay College.

Captain Giulio Ressa expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome, describing it as a "great experience that exceeded their expectations." He noted the significance of traditional performances in upholding respect for ancestors, drawing parallels to his experiences in Italy.

Having visited New Zealand over 5 times during his 30-plus years of sailing, Captain Ressa remarked on the beauty of Aotearoa's landscapes and its exquisite wine, reminiscent of his homeland.

"Whangārei like the rest of the country seems to have its own beauty in its landscapes, beaches and waterfalls. And am sure that our passengers will love what they see and do today," concluded the captain.

The passengers are scheduled to depart Whangarei at 7:00 p.m. today, concluding their 2-week New Zealand trip with a visit to the Bay of Islands tomorrow before continuing their journey to Sydney.
