In a formal maritime exchange witnessed at the port of Papeete Sunday evening (February 5), the captain of Windstar Cruises’ Wind Spirit, a renowned sailing vessel, ceremonially transferred the flag of French Polynesia to the captain of Star Breeze, the larger motor yacht of the fleet. This transition marks the first occasion in the 35-year history of Windstar’s voyages in the South Pacific where a sailing yacht will not be present in the region.
Captain Simon Terry of Star Breeze expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue Windstar Cruises’ voyages in French Polynesia, affirming the commitment to uphold the immersive journey experience.
Among the attendees were President Moetai Brotherson of French Polynesia, Christopher Prelog (President of Windstar Cruises), Janet Bava (Chief Commercial Officer of Windstar Cruises), along with ~200 Windstar guests, media representatives, and tourism executives.
Christopher Prelog reflected on the enduring relationships cultivated in Tahiti over the years, acknowledging Wind Spirit's longstanding presence as an integral part of the Tahitian backdrop. Despite Wind Spirit's departure for refurbishment in Europe, Prelog expressed optimism about the possibility of its return to Tahiti, envisioning a future where Windstar Cruises may operate two ships in the region.
With sentiments of anticipation rather than farewell, Prelog concluded, "Until we meet again," echoing the hope for future reunions with the Tahitian seas.
