Carnival Corporation nears 20% GHG emission intensity reduction target ahead of schedule

   February 7, 2024 ,   Cruise Industry

Carnival Corporation & plc has reported significant progress in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity on a lower berth capacity basis. The company is poised to achieve an 18% reduction in GHG emission intensity in 2024 compared to 2019, nearing its original 20% reduction goal set for 2030.

Anticipating a remarkable 42% reduction in GHG emission intensity on a lower berth capacity basis by the end of the year since its initial benchmark in 2008, Carnival Corporation is positioned to outpace the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) 2030 carbon intensity reduction timeline.

This announcement follows the company's decision last year to expedite its 2030 GHG intensity reduction goal by four years. Carnival Corporation committed to achieving at least a 20% reduction on a lower berth capacity basis by 2026 compared to 2019 levels. This accelerated progress is attributed to the company's proactive measures to enhance energy efficiency, decrease overall fuel consumption, and adopt emission-reducing technologies and lower-emission fuels.

Carnival Corporation's reduction strategies are twofold:

  • Energy Efficiency Measures:

Implementation of innovative technology packages, including advanced HVAC systems and LED lighting technologies, resulting in a 5-10% reduction in fuel usage per ship.

Optimization of hull design and coatings to minimize drag, enhancing fuel efficiency.

Development of energy-efficient itineraries and utilization of ocean currents for propulsion efficiency.

  • Emission Reduction Initiatives:

Adoption of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as a cleaner fuel option, leading the industry with nine LNG-capable ships in service and two more on order.

Deployment of Advanced Air Quality Systems to mitigate particulate matter and other compounds from ships' exhaust.

Exploration of advanced fuel technologies, including lithium-ion battery storage systems and fuel cells powered by hydrogen derived from methanol.

Carnival Corporation remains steadfast in its commitment to environmental stewardship, investing significantly in sustainable practices to safeguard communities, marine ecosystems, and scenic spaces. The company aims to achieve net-zero emissions from ship operations by 2050 as part of its long-term sustainability vision.
