The Turkish shipbuilder Tersan Shipyard Yalova (in northwestern Turkey) has secured a shipbuilding order from Norwegian ferry company "Fjord1 AS" for 4 battery-powered autonomous double-ended ferries, heralded as the world’s first of their kind.
The contract between Tersan and Fjord1 was unveiled on February 27th, with both parties emphasizing that these boats will redefine Norwegian coastal transport by seamlessly integrating efficiency, safety, and innovation.
Scheduled to serve the route between Lavik and Oppedal (starting on September 1st, 2026), these zero-emission ships represent a significant leap forward in sustainable maritime transportation.
Fjord1 has outlined plans for these ferries to feature autonomous navigation capabilities and a high-level of vessel function automation, effectively replacing manual operations for enhanced efficiency and safety.
The implementation of automation functions and autonomous systems, including autocrossing and autodocking, is slated for completion by 2027, with autonomous navigation set to follow in 2028.
This collaboration between Tersan and Fjord1 marks a continuation of their partnership initiated in 2021 when Tersan Shipyard Yalova was chosen to construct two battery-powered ships for Fjord1. Before this, Tersan Shipyard successfully delivered six all-electric ferries to Fjord1.
Additionally, Fjord1 is anticipating the delivery of three new electric ferries in the second and third quarters of 2024. These vessels, contracted for a 15-year service agreement with Vestland County Council, are scheduled to commence operations in January 2025, further solidifying Fjord1's commitment to sustainable maritime solutions.
