Incat Crowther has successfully delivered the first of 6 new passenger ferries to Hong Kong-based operator Sun Ferry.

Named Xin Ming Xhu VIII (IMO 9999759), the vessel has commenced its service, transporting commuters from the Central Ferry Pier to the town of Mui Wo and the island of Cheung Chau.

Constructed by Guangzhou-based AFAI Southern Shipyard, the ship can accommodate up to 500 passengers, with seating for 299 on the main deck and an additional 201 on the upper deck. The main deck has 6 wheelchair spaces, pushchair storage, two dedicated areas for passengers traveling with pets, and ample luggage storage facilities.

Sam Mackay, technical manager at Incat Crowther, expressed satisfaction with the collaborative design and construction process involving Incat Crowther, Sun Ferry, and AFAI Southern Shipyard. Mackay highlighted the vessel's timely delivery, superior performance, and fulfillment of Sun Ferry's objective to provide Hong Kong residents with a world-class mass transit experience.

Featuring Incat Crowther's latest generation hull form, Xin Ming Xhu VIII boasts a top speed of 30 knots. The vessel offers three passenger boarding locations on both the port and starboard sides of the main deck. An elevated wheelhouse on the upper deck provides crew members with a panoramic 360-degree view. Additionally, the vessel is equipped with 140 solar panels installed on the roof, generating 14 kilowatts of onboard power.

Construction is progressing on the second phase of new vessels to be integrated into the Sun Ferry fleet, with the final vessel expected to be delivered by the end of 2025.
