A norovirus outbreak affected ~100 tourists on a HAL-Holland America Line ship.

Out of the 2,522 guests onboard ms Koningsdam, 98 passengers and 12 crew members reported symptoms of illness, primarily experiencing diarrhea and vomiting, as reported by the CDC agency (USA's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

Koningsdam is currently on a roundtrip voyage in the North Pacific (through Hawaii and French Polynesia) after departing from homeport San Diego CA USA on February 17th.

In response to the outbreak, Holland America and the ship's crew implemented enhanced cleaning and disinfection protocols, as well as isolating affected passengers and crew members, among other precautionary measures, stated the CDC.

According to a spokesperson for HAL, the safety and well-being of guests and crew was a top priority.

During the voyage, some guests had reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness.

“The cases were mostly mild and quickly resolving. We initiated enhanced sanitation protocols to minimize further transmission and the incidence of cases has since declined significantly.”
