A 56-year-old American passenger's Caribbean voyage came to an unexpected halt on Friday, March 15th, following a medical emergency onboard.
The USCG/Coast Guard reported that Symphony of the Seas was situated 116 nautical miles southwest of Cabo Rojo (Puerto Rico) when the man displayed symptoms suggestive of a stroke.
Recognizing the need for medical attention beyond the ship's capabilities, the crew promptly requested assistance via radio.
A US Coast Guard aircrew conducted a medevac operation, transporting the ailing passenger to La Mercedita Airport in Ponce, where he was subsequently hospitalized for treatment.
Commander Raymond Jamros praised the aircrew for their swift and effective response, emphasizing the importance of coordinated efforts between the air station, sector, and Royal Caribbean International.
“It was a great team effort on all fronts. We appreciate the coordination between the air station, sector and Royal Caribbean. The effective coordination and communication allowed us to get on scene in a timely matter and transport the patient to higher medical care.”
