Finnish technology conglomerate Wartsila has recently inked a lifecycle agreement with the UK-based passenger and cargo shipping company P&O Ferries covering two hybrid ferries - MV Pioneer and MV Liberte.
This comprehensive agreement encompasses spare parts and maintenance services, as well as maintenance planning, operational support, and Wartsila’s Expert Insight predictive maintenance service.
The aim is to detect issues proactively, minimizing the likelihood of schedule disruptions. These disruptions pose significant challenges for ferry operators as they often necessitate compensatory measures such as increased speed, leading to higher fuel consumption and emissions.
The P&O-Wartsila agreement was formalized in January 2024.
Both newbuild ferries are equipped with hybrid propulsion systems incorporating battery power and four Wartsila 31 main diesel engines. It is anticipated that they will emit 40% fewer pollutants compared to the vessels they are replacing. By ensuring optimal performance, the agreement aims to further bolster the environmental sustainability of these ships.
MV Pioneer commenced its commercial/revenue operations in June 2023, while MV Liberte is slated to begin service in early 2024.
These 230-meter-long vessels (currently the world’s largest double-ended ferries) operate the UK-France/English Channel crossing route between Dover England and Calais France.
