Passengers aboard RCI-Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas faced a distressing situation when a young man jumped overboard in the early hours of Thursday, April 4th.
The incident occurred as the 18-deck ship was navigating between Cuba and the Bahamas’ Grand Inagua Island. The individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, made the leap from one of the ship’s decks, observed by his father and brother.
Eyewitnesses described the act as impulsive, suggesting it was a spontaneous decision. In response to the incident, Royal Caribbean promptly initiated search and rescue procedures in collaboration with the US Coast Guard, which has assumed control of the search operation.
Royal Caribbean issued a statement affirming their crew’s swift response and collaboration with the USCG. They also stated that their Care Team is providing support to the family during this challenging time. Out of respect for the privacy of the individual and their family, no further details were disclosed.
Upon learning of the incident, fellow passengers sought to assist in any possible manner.
The USCG District Seven confirmed that search efforts were underway, with resources including the USCG Cutter Seneca and Air Station Miami HC-144 crews actively involved in the operation.
