Celebrity Cruises' EDGE-class vessel Celebrity Apex conducted a rescue operation this week, aiding a group of individuals aboard a distressed vessel between Cuba and Mexico.
Celebrity Apex came across the small vessel in need of assistance on Monday, April 1st, as reported by a spokesperson representing the cruise company.
Upon encountering the distressed boat, the liner's crew promptly initiated a rescue operation, successfully retrieving 7 individuals from the vessel. These individuals were provided with necessary medical attention, and the crew is collaborating closely with the USCG/Coast Guard in managing the situation.
On March 30th, Celebrity Apex departed from Fort Lauderdale Florida on a 7-day roundtrip itinerary visiting Key West FL, Belize City, Cozumel Mexico, and Grand Cayman.
Celebrity's spokesperson didn't disclose the identities or affiliations of the rescued individuals.
While the ship reported the rescue to the USCG, Petty Officer Eric Rodriguez clarified that the Coast Guard didn't partake in the operation due to the location of the incident.
“In accordance with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and maritime tradition, it is common and somewhat expected that mariners will render assistance to other seafarers in distress if they have the capability to do so.”
