An expansion project underway at the airport of Nuuk, Greenland's capital, is poised to transform the region's expedition cruise landscape in 2025, with leading cruise lines Viking, Silversea, and HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions) charting new courses.
Scheduled for completion later this year, the airport expansion includes a lengthened runway and a modernized terminal, facilitating increased air travel access to Greenland. Icelandair and Air Greenland have confirmed plans to offer flights to Nuuk from Reykjavik and Copenhagen, respectively, with future aspirations for U.S. connections.
This infrastructure enhancement is reshaping Nuuk into a pivotal embarkation and disembarkation point for expedition voyages, replacing Reykjavik as the primary departure hub.
Viking is unveiling 4 new itineraries from Nuuk aboard the Viking Octantis, ranging from 13 to 27 days and traversing the polar landscapes of Greenland and Canada. These journeys position Nuuk as a focal point for voyage commencement or conclusion.
Silversea Cruises is introducing a 15-day route departing from Churchill, Manitoba, on July 25 aboard the Silver Endeavour. The voyage explores Canada's northern territories and Greenland, with Nuuk featuring prominently as a port of call.
Similarly, HX is expanding its Greenland program, offering nine itineraries, including new Grand Greenland sailings departing from Nuuk. These routes, aboard the Fridtjof Nansen, highlight the awe-inspiring natural beauty and cultural heritage of Greenland's western coast.
All three cruise lines are capitalizing on Nuuk's enhanced aviation infrastructure to provide travelers with immersive expedition experiences, showcasing the remote wilderness and rich cultural tapestry of the Arctic region.
