HX-Hurtigruten Expeditions has announced a partnership with Ocean Bottle, a social impact and reusable water bottle brand dedicated to reducing ocean-bound plastic. This initiative, launched in anticipation of World Oceans Day on June 8, underscores HX's commitment to sustainability, building on its pioneering decision in 2018 to become the first cruise line to ban single-use plastics.
As part of this initiative, every guest on an HX expedition will receive a complimentary reusable Ocean Bottle. Each bottle funds the collection of plastic equivalent to 1,000 plastic bottles in weight. This program not only helps reduce plastic waste but also supports local communities. Plastic collectors exchange plastic for money and gain access to resources such as healthcare, education, and financial security. Ocean Bottle, through partnerships with grassroots organizations in coastal communities across countries like Indonesia, India, and Ghana, has collected over 14 million kilograms of plastic, equivalent to one billion plastic bottles.
HX's dedication to ocean conservation extends beyond this partnership. The company regularly conducts beach cleanups and supports vital research through its Science & Education program. With over 75% of the planet covered by oceans and housing more than 90% of known wildlife, understanding and preserving these environments is crucial. HX's fleet of advanced expedition ships helps reach remote areas to gather essential scientific data, from whale migrations and phytoplankton communities to cloud observations and the Northern Lights. Guests, alongside HX’s Science & Education Teams, contribute to collecting and analyzing data to support global research efforts.
The collaboration with Ocean Bottle also aligns with HX’s 1893 Ambassador Loyalty program. Members of the program can enjoy discounts on the Ocean Bottle website, with Level 1 members receiving a 10% discount and Level 2 members a 20% discount.
In its recently published 2023 ESG Report, HX highlighted its environmental stewardship and commitment to responsible business practices. Significant achievements include a 30% reduction in waste per guest (22% reduction in food waste) and a 16% reduction in water consumption. HX aims to achieve 100% reuse and recycling of all waste streams by 2030.
